NIKON SB900 + NIKON D700 / D300 / D3X / D2X

Customer Questions & Answers

Customer Reviews

No matter how tight the Velcro fasteners seem to be it needs to be pushed back frequently.
James King
No, the ring is NOT a perfect circle, but I'm also more photoshop savvy and I can fix that pretty easily if it's just on the eyes.
Melissa Pilkington
It worked great on my camera and I was really impressed with how lightweight and easily attachable it was.

For the price this is a great ring flash. It does lose two stops of light, which I read before buying. However, attaching to the canon 430ex ii I can bump up the compensation and it works fine. I did have to modify it just a little bit on the rubber where it connects to the flash. The bottom piece was too big and was stopping the flash from being level. But after slicing off about a quarter inch with a exact o blade it fits fine and works well. The build is a little cheap, but come on, it's $36. It if does break its cheap enough to get another one. The price is the main reason for the five stars. But it seems like it should last if you are careful with it. As a side note, the shipping speed from Cowboystudio is great, it actually got here a day before it said. I do plan to buy some more of my studio equipment from them.

Edit: I have had this quite a while now. It still works great, though if you plan to use it for any kind of portrait work it does loose about two stops of light, up close it doesnt loose any.

- It is a cheap piece of plastic - seriously looked like someone printed the logo on a inkjet printer at home
- Extremely heavy, bulky, not easy to carry, I feel like the velcro isn't going to keep it on for long
- Extreme loss of light due to light leaks
- Shipping is expensive. If the product itself was truly $35 without the tack-on shipping (I believe it was an extra $15) it might have been worth buying it just for fun.

While it is not the best made it will do a decent job for close ups, especially for plants and insects. Not very durable though.

I really like this, but I need to make a stabilizer for it. I feel that it being on my flash and then being held on to my camera with only a hot shoe isn't very safe for camera and flash. When I take photos with it, I generally hold it to make sure I don't accidentally slam it in to something.

So far this item works great. I have been testing it out in various closeup situations and it does exactly what the advertisements say. I had heard it might be necessary to take it apart and add some silver mylar to get better output. When I opened it up the manufacturer had obviously heard the same as the modification was allready incorporated it in their shipping product..... Works great.

I picked one of these up after seeing it elsewhere for twice the price, and it was worth every penny. My clients are incredibly impressed by it (despite it being a cheap adapter), and it really provides a nice even amount of light for close-up portraits when you don't have a better option for bounce. It's light, and I worry it's going to crack one of these days... but it was really inexpensive and fits perfectly over my 580ex II. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get more use out of their external flash unit!

I was looking for a cheap version of a ring flash and got what I paid for. I think it may work in certain circumstances, but if you want the look of what high end ring flashes do, save the money and by the real thing. It was worthy a try and maybe I will find some use out of it, but in the end, you get what you pay for.

...at this price it works perfectly for forensic / technical photography. Fit very well on my 60D with the 430 EX mounted. The ring is large enough to fit over my Sigma 17-70 F2.8-4, even when the hood is mounted. It's kind of hard to tell, because the light is changed so much, but my impression is that it costs about one full stop of light to use it. I also trimmed the lower part of the rubber around the strobe for a better fit, as another reviewer suggested.
