REAL COUNTRY STILL LIVES!,
By Keith F. Lynn (England,United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cowgirl Dreams (Audio CD)
Thank God for real country artists like Joni Harms!Having bought Joni's first-and still my favourite-album 8 years(! )ago,I have waited and waited for her next release. And believe me,this was very well worth the wait!Joni has one of the very best voices around, superbly suited to true Country music and she puts it to excellent use on these songs. She is also an excellent musician. Joni must love your State of Montana because she has followed up "The Only Thing Bluer Than His Eyes"(my favourite track of all time)with a superbly haunting "Blue Montana Moon",a beautiful ballad which is complimented in the smooth relaxation stakes by an equally excellent "Long Hard Ride". This album features excellent,real-country ballads and some nicely-light foot-tappers and is only let down by 1"Rocker"and it's too-short playing time. But then,Joni could make an hour-long album and it would still be too short whilst she treats us to this kind of real,great,old-fashioned Country!

First of two great western albums from Joni,

Joni's first album was Hometown girl, a mainstream country album released ten years before this on a major label, and I believe there may have been one or two others after that on a small independent label. Nevertheless, this was the first album of Joni's to make a real impact. This is the first of two traditional country albums with a strong western flavor that Joni recorded on the Warner Western label. It now seems that there will be no more as I cannot access Joni's website any more. On this album and its follow-up (After all), Joni sings honest country songs, with traditional acoustic backing. Joni wrote all the songs, jointly with others, which have been inspired by Joni's life on a ranch, and of that type of lifestyle in general. The western theme is most obvious in the opening Belle Starr (about a contemporary of Jesse James) and the closing Long hard ride, but many of the other songs are full of western images. However, my favorite song here, Catalog dreams, is one of the few that could work in almost any setting - it is about a poor family dreaming about what they could buy from a catalog if they had money. Joni is in fine voice throughout on this very upbeat album. For those seeking traditional country music, it doesn't come any better than this, with or without the cowboy songs.

one session of listening to "blue montana moon" and i promise you'll be enthralled by this cowgirl's talent. her voice is clear and true, her lyrics compelling and joyous, her melodies contagious. this isn't canned country music with flashbulbs and short skirts; it's heartfelt, kickass cowboy/rodeo songs that bring to mind chris ledoux and the "old" west. looking forward to joni's next release!

JONI HARMS REPRESENTS A CLEAR REFLECTION OF COUNTRY MUSIC FROM THE PAST. HER MESSAGES REPRESENT THE WHOLESOME, HARDWORKING PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE AMERICA WHAT IT IS TODAY. WITH A CRISP, CLEAR VOICE, AND DEEP ROOTED UNDERSTANDING OF HUMAN NATURE, SHE CREATES MUSIC THAT REACHES DEEP INTO YOUR SOUL AND MEMORY; JOGGING THE FEELINGS AND EXPERIENCES THAT WE ALL HOLD DEAR. EASY TO LISTEN TO AND FUN TO SING ALONG WITH, THIS CD IS A MUST HAVE IN ALL HOMES. CHILDREN CAN ALSO ENJOY THE UNCOMPLICATED MESSAGES AND LILTING RYHTHMS IN JONI'S MUSIC. COMBINE HER "LONG RIDE HOME", WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY CONTAGIOUS, WITH THE HEART-WARMING "BLUE MONTANA MOON" AND YOU HAVE THE PERFECT RECIPE FOR TRUE COUNTRY MUSIC LOVERS.

A Real Album,
By "garyallangirl22" (Graham, Washington) - See all my reviews

I by chance found this cd and by the looks of the cover I gave it a shot, praying it was a real country album, no pop, just country. And I got a REAL country album and much more, This cd has such an earthy feel to it and these songs came from the hearts of real people who live a true country life style. The best songs here, I would have to say would be "Old Fashion Girl" because I feel like this song is about me and many other country girls, I can relate to this song on many levels, another would be "When I get Over You" which I feel is an extremely honest song, and it's very emotion, but not too over done. But my favorite on this album, with the most beautiful lyrics would have to be the last track, "Long Hard Ride" the lyrics paint a picture for you, and you can imagine yourself sitting proudly up in a saddle just thanking god that you are alive and in such a beautiful place. I truely love that song for every single word in it. The only thing that I dont particularly love is Joni's voice, it's very different and it's not that I dont like it, its just I'm not used to it, and usually I love more powerful voices, but the lyrics and the music and just the way this album makes you feel is well worth it. This is true COWGIRL music!

The real deal,
By
This review is from: Cowgirl Dreams (Audio CD)
Modern county music has lost its sense of melody along with its sense of traditional themes (Try singing along with Big & Rich & some of the every current stars). This is one of the reasons that Joni Harms is special - her songs actually have a melody & deal with the themes usually associated with country music. The other reasons are that they are sung by a lady who has a great voice & alot of enthusiasm, & the songs are just good music - they are not over-produced & the musicians are playing traditional country music instruments; no synthesizers or wailing elctric guitars. This CD is great & so is the more recent "Let's Put The Western Back in Coutry Music".
You should buy these CD's because you will enjoy them and also to send a message to the "suits" in Nashville that we want our country music back.

This is a great CD. If you like real country music--that is, what you may not hear on the radio, buy this CD. Every song is great, especially "Two-steppin' Texas Blue and "Long Hard Ride." Get this, as well as anthing by Becky Hobbs, Heather Myles, and Danni Leigh.

The Real Deal,
By
This review is from: Cowgirl Dreams (Audio CD)
There are many current singers who put on a cowboy hat and boots and pretend to sing Nashpop tunes thinking they are the real deal. But this is not so with Joni Harms. Harms who co-wrote every song here, lets you know she has first hand experience of being serenaded by the "Blue Montana Moon," of the pains and joys of horse riding("Long Hard Ride") and the pains of a broken heart ("When I Get Over You"). This album showcases an excellent country album with a western flavor by a woman who sings with passion and experience. Harms has a clear unique voice that really makes you believe that you are really listening to a great singer with simple but powerful songs. The only criticism is that the CD is very short (time wise) as the CD runs below 30 minutes. Maybe she does that so as to wet our appetites for her next album which I am already eagerly anticipating.
