Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa (2005) was named a Geisel Honor Book, and this new title, the third in the series, continues the winning friendship between girl and horse with more stories aimed at emerging readers. When Kate starts school, Cocoa suffers separation pangs: he follows her school bus; he feels frustrated when she turns her attention to homework; and he is jealous of her new school friend. Once again, Lewin's charming paintings reinforce the action and create expressive characters in both boot-clad cowgirl Kate and her sensitive cocoa-colored horse. The breezy, dialogue-heavy text is nicely geared to and paced for newly independent readers. Suggest this also for read-alouds with preschool-age siblings, who will recognize Cocoa's fear of being left behind. Gillian Engberg

Cowgirl Kate is very age appropriate-- it does NOT have any backtalking, sassy, know it all tone that seems to prevail in books for young girls these days. My daughter is 6 years old and loves this series of books.

The sweetest little girls book series! My daughter, my husband, myself and Nana all love them! My daughter is four years old and they will be great for years! I believe that this book has four chapters each chapter is only a couple of pages, and each page only a few sentences. Great pictures too! I buy them for all my friends kids for birthdays and Christmas. They make a nice gift and this way I can get them the whole series :)

When the seasons change and fall comes around, it's time for Kate to go to school. Cocoa isn't too thrilled with the fact, as the four short, easy-to-read chapters of the book show.

In MARY'S LAMB, Cocoa is determined to follow Kate and her school bus all the way to school, until he realizes that the faster she gets there, the quicker she'll return back home.

With THE PORTRAIT, Cocoa helps Kate with her homework assignment, which involves painting a picture.

A NEW FRIEND introduces Kate's schoolmate, Jenny, who Cocoa is determined not to like, until Kate reassures her best friend that nothing will ever take the place of her horse.

In A REPORT, Kate and Cocoa both realize that Cocoa is the best one to help with a school report on horses!

The COWGIRL KATE AND COCOA series is great for beginning readers, or for a quick and fun read before bed. This one is no exception, and the lessons learned in the story are ones that everyone can relate to.

This book is perfect for my daughter at the moment, a good intro chapter book, with enough text on the pages to be real reading, but also with wonderful color illustrations that she enjoyed. The author knows her horses - (we especially liked the part where Cocoa decides he looks too skinny in his portrait, and thus needs to eat more) and the four separate stories/chapters are sweet without being overly so. An excellent choice for any horse-loving child ready for the step past picture books.

We have all the Cowgirl Kate books...my 6 year old Granddaughter loves them--she reads them over and over. Illustrations are really sweet, and each book is a stand-alone story, but with similarites so that a child will gleefully start predicting what Cocoa or Kate will do. Especially if your child loves horses, these are a MUST!

I have 5 children ages 6 and under, and they (we!!) LOVE these books!! This one is a favorite, and has been requested almost every night this week. We have horses, so Cocoa's "horsie" attitude is extra funny to hubby and I. We appreciate that they are free of euphemisms and are well suited for our children. Buy the whole series, they are too cute not to!

My grand daughter enjoyed reading this little horse story. It's a cute book for a young reader. She was happy that I ordered it for her.
