Book Description

April 15, 1997
Cowgirl Rising is a beautifully rendered metaphor for today's woman. Here, Streep weaves the story behind Howell-Sickles' vision of the cowgirl and places her in the context of world mythologies. The result is a celebration of the courage, self-reliance and exuberance of the cowgirl spirit, and indeed of the female spirit today. 120+ full-color paintings.

About the Author

Donna Howell-Sickles was born in 1949 in Gainesville, Texas and raised on a 900 acre farm. In 1972, while earning her BFA at Texas Tech in Lubbock, she acquired an old postcard c. 1935 depicting a cowgirl seated on a horse which read, “Greetings from a Real Cowgirl from the Ole Southwest.” Attracted by the charm and confidence of the woman in the image, she began incorporating the cowgirl figure into her work, as well as collecting and researching these old-time cowgirl images. Before long, this icon was the central theme in the contemporary settings of Donna’s pieces. Donna’s works are largely mixed-media. She works on paper and canvas in a mix of charcoal, pastel and acrylic most often leaving her under-drawing visible. In Donna’s pieces, the cowgirl achieves the status of a heroine, and her images have brought her national attention and success. Her work is rich with symbolism and allusions to classical mythology, but the viewer does not need to be familiar with the references in order to appreciate the female affirmations of each piece. Her paintings can be found in museum collections throughout the west including the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Texas; The National Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas; The Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody Wyoming and several others.

Peg Streep holds advanced degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University and is author of many spiritual titles, including "Spiritual Gardening: Creating Sacred Space Outdoors," "Altars Made Easy: A Complete Guide to Creating Your Own Sacred Space," "Mary, Queen of Heaven," and "Sanctuaries of the Goddess: The Sacred Landscapes and Objects." She lives in a suburb outside of New York City where she devotes equal time to motherhood and writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cowgirl Rising is *almost* the right name for this book., August 12, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Cowgirl Rising: The Art of Donna Howell-Sickles (Hardcover)
Cowgirl Rising is almost the right name for the coffee table/art book featuring the art work of Donna Howell-Sickles with text by Peg Streep.

Done in bold primary colors of red, blue and white, Howell-Sickles cowgirls jump off the page. These graphic style cowgirls stand out against the uncomplicated backgrounds of natural browns and grays. The oil and charcoal works will appeal to even the most casual of glancers and keep them turning the pages to see more.

The original inspiration of turn of century postcard is easily seen in Postcard Cowgirl VII where a smiling cowgirl with her horses sits astride a fence and waves to the viewer. A Family Tradition shows us three cowgirls, daughter, mother, grandmother, the traditional three phases of life.

While Donna Howell-Sickle uses the icons and images of the American West and the cowgirl, to call this western art seems almost to confining. Even the causal observer, seeing the steer-riding cowgirl who holds the horns of a rather gentle looking bull, will see the Greek myth of Zeus and Europa (and in case you missed the message, the work is entitled Zeus and Europa). In Totem II a benign bear stands behind the cowgirl, who, along with ravens and dogs form a totem pole-like portrait.

This a stand out book has just the right mix of art and text. Peg Streep commentary at the beginning of each chapter provides information on Howell-Sickles and on the art itself. Text also accompanies each picture directing attention to the symbols and details that gives the viewer a deeper understanding of the work.

As the book progresses, the always smiling, vibrant, confident cowgirl becomes the more than a free spirited, unconfined westerner. She is Woman, pure and simple. The images of the smiling, confident and happy cowgirls will stay with you a long time.

The cowgirls of Cowgirl Rising are not just rising, they have arisen.
