Fascinating insights into western Americana,
By
This review is from: Cowgirls: Early Images and Collectibles (Schiffer Book for Collectors) (Paperback)
Judy Crandall has put together a wonderful collection of objects related to cowgirls in the western United States: photographs, postcards, and images of clothing, saddles, guns and other related materials.I found the photographes the most interesting part of the book. The women were all attractive and amazingly active. Crandall offers some of the objects for sale on her website (link in first Comment). Crandall doesn't permit duplication of her images on Amazon, but you can get a good feeling of the treasures here from the following descriptions: "RP postcard, unused in good condition, image slightly faded possibly due to poor processing at the time. Along bottom of image: "Rene Hafley, Fox Hastings, Rose Smith, Ruth Roach, Mable Strickland, Prairie Rose, Dorothy Morell (Doubleday photo). In green pencil (could be ink but is not indented into image) written across Mable Strickland's body is "Champion Women Rider". Pictured in my book, Cowgirls; Early Images and Collectibles (Judy Crandall) on page 58, 3.5" X 5.5" standard postcard size. $125.00" "027 - RP postcard in overall good to very good condition, some slight creasing but does not break the emulsion. Unused. Written on the post card " `They're off' Cow girls race. Cheyenne Frontier Days -1932" with the notice: "Outwest Photo Service Denver". Pictured in my book, Cowgirls; Early Images and Collectibles (Judy Crandall) on page 27, 3.5" X 5.5" standard postcard size. $145.00" "An outstanding Hamley & Co. Ladies leather riding skirt decorated with hundreds of nickel spots and 15 nickel slotted tie-conchos. Made in the late teens or early 20's by the prestigious Pendleton maker out of Oregon. See close up of label. Note fine detail of spots surrounding pockets and along fringe perimeter of each skirt leg. This is one of the finest examples known of this beautiful premier Cowgirl collectible. Excellent condition, probably worn only once if at all. Some aging. Featured on the cover of the Fifth Annual Wild West Auction presented by High Noon, January 1995. Current value at $6000.00 in the new, revised edition of my book Cowgirls, Early Images and Collectibles." This book provides some indication of the value of objects with a cowgirl connection for collectors. For people like with only a general interest in the West, the book is an unusual insight into women's roles. Fascinating and well done. Robert C. Ross 2009

As the author of "The Cowgirl's Cookbook",( available on Amazon) I tip my Stetson to the author of this informative and interesting book. I recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about the amazing women who rode broncs to the whistle before they got the vote.

Cowgirls at best,
By Elizabeth (Texas United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cowgirls: Early Images and Collectibles: With Price Guide (Schiffer Book for Collectors & Historians) (Paperback)
As a historian and teacher, I often find original articles and photographs as the best teaching aids possible. Although traveling photographers often staged photos, they also used items of clothing and props associated with the times, thus providing a visual study of articles. Oral history is also at times incorrect since memories & viewpoints often aren't completely correct. But, once again the visual item helps determining truth from fiction. This book is an excellect and colorfull collection of garments, photos, postcards, etc. spanding many years of the cowgirl. Items are stated to be unknown if the author is in question of its actual origin. The photos are very clear and are an easy study and the information is very informative.
