I have to say going from the COWON S9 to Z2 makes life sweeter :) The COWON S9 is an awesome device as it is, but it isn't without its flaws. The UI can be slow, inconsistent, and unresponsive at times. But the audio capabilities make up for its short comings. Still you're left with that "if only" feeling... NO MORE, THE COWON Z2 IS HERE!

The Z2 is consistent, fast, and responsive! Navigating through my music, image, and video library seamlessly in matrix mode is priceless. Sure you can get an Apple or Android PMP device that can do the same, but wait, they don't have COWON simply amazing audio capabilities! So guest what, COWON just trampled the other PMP's.

- The Z2 has a nice slick design, it's light weight, and feels durable. It runs on Android operating system, which plays a large role in COWON UI improvement.

- The audio capabilities have been extended even further from the S9 (more presets and audio manipulation + BBE), as if it needed to be.

- It has a built in speaker which lets me have continuous play from walking to my car, on my car ride, to my headphone on my long train ride, and walking home to my apartment were I can then connect it to my sound system. I love it :D

- A microSD slot which you can expand the memory capacity of the Z2 (32GB to 64GB card + internal 32GB = more music). Now my all FLAC PMP is coming true!

- Awesome HD touch screen, it's like my Galaxy tablet. It display images and videos with impressive amounts of detail.

- HDMI capable and plays almost any video format imaginable including MKV!

- Did I mention more audio capabilities? Big emphasis on this people, BIG!

Conclusion:
Based on sound quality and price, I give the Z2 five stars. If I listen to a cello, I hear the bow attack the string, I hear the string vibrate and I hear the cello resonate. I rarely hear such detail and clarity without paying a lot more money.

The Z2 is also fast enough to enjoy Cowon's other features. The D3 is too slow for effective use of the internet but the Z2 seems about right. If you want a do-everything unit and are willing to sacrifice sound quality, I suggest a Samsung or Sony. Some of the Apple products, with an added outboard amplifier, will provide do-everything features and good sound quality at a higher price.

Features and Performance:
Unlike other Cowon products, the Z2 is not a revolutionary product. The Z2 builds upon lessons learned with the D3.

Core features work as they should:
+ The Z2 now provides gapless playback of songs
+ The start of each song is no longer truncated
+ Gingerbread 2.3 and firmware updates have been applied making the device very stable.
+ Media playback is superb.
+ The great Cowon sound quality can be enhanced (if you wish).

My Baseline:
My music player comparison includes the iRiver H120, H320 and the Cowon S9, X5L and D3. I have owned the Shure SE420, SE530 SE535 and I currently use the UE Capital earbuds with custom ear molds. I also own the Sennheiser HD800 but I did not use these for testing because I do not currently have an appropriate amp...
Summary of sound quality:
- As stated previously, The Z2 provides excellent sound quality. Little details in each recording, like someone taking a breath or someone making a background sound, can be heard. The Z2 presents the sound as full bodied and intimate.

I researched the Z2 Plenue well. I'm slow to jump on the Tablet/Smartphone bandwagon. My primary interest is the Portable Media Player (PMP) capability and Cowon/Jet Audio's reputation for high sound quality and wide range of formats accepted. This is an upgrade to a workhorse 32 GB PMP from a well known audio company. It still works, but is litterally carrying a hard drive in your hand. It's also my first Android OS experience. So here are my first impressions.

1. Out of the box (Nicely double boxed for ground shipping), I'd recommend applying a screen cover before doing anything else to avoid grease and dust under your screen protector that leave those annoying bubbles. (Custom sized for the Z2 and available from Amazon.com) Cowon's packaging is well thought out to protect the player.

2. This player has a Firmware upgrade due - out of the box, so do that right away if it applies to your player. (Mine was ver. 4.31, upgrading to ver. 4.33. Purchased 6/2012) Quickstart booklet and Cowon web instructions make it easy.

3. Accepts up to 32 GB microSD card. Don't be cheap...name brand mobile ultra? That's a lot of data to loose and will give you 64 GB total less the preloaded OS and 24 Apps. The Z2 accepts NTFS and I believe FAT32 now too. With my PC, I couldn't access the microSD card until I connected the Z2 to my computer via USB and chose the Z2 as a porable storage unit. Cowon makes it very clear to use the "Safely Remove" function on your PC.

Look and Feel
The Z2 has sharp corners. Some say it's a negative, but I am OK with it. It is sleek and Stealthy (No huge Mfg. logo like some) Cowon uses the display to let you know the details. It is "unibody" construction with a firm rubberized feel for a solid grip.
