PreSchool-Grade 2--At first glance, it appears that acquaintance with Paris is a requisite to grasping the humor of this whimsical picture book. Soon, though, it becomes clear that readers of all ages and degrees of sophistication will laugh at the sight of cows riding in horse-pulled carriages, tipping their high hats, promenading in long skirts, and delighting in ``casserole de l'herbe,'' a treat shaped like the Arc de Triomphe, prepared especially for them by the chef at Maxim's. Impressionistic watercolor cartoons, some daubed with spots of color in the style of Monet and some posed like Seurat's Sunday in the Park are appropriate for this turn-of-the-century romp. When the cows return to their fields, they decide it is just as satisfying to be home as it was to visit the city. Both the story and its conclusion are subtle and pleasing, but much of the clever detail will be lost in group viewing. --Nancy Seiner, The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh
