Grade 4-7-Along with discussions of what motivates these animals to attack people, farm animals, and pets, the authors cover the habitat of each creature, its preferred food, and how it hunts and survives in a human world that is increasingly closing in on their natural territory. Bear alternates between facts and accounts of ursine attacks and includes some population statistics and general facts on these animals. A full page of tips on how to prepare for hiking and camping in bear country offers sound, practical advice. Coyote provides a balanced view of this misunderstood animal. Readers will learn that these creatures live in wild areas and forests, as well as some suburbs and even large cities. Both books have many full-page color photographs; two in Coyote are particularly graphic. While the books will appeal to browsers, the lists of resources for further reading and related Web sites and magazines will aid students doing research. Easy-to-read texts, close-up photographs, and appealing formats make these titles especially appropriate for collections needing high-interest/low-reading level materials.
