Book Description

September 15, 1988

"The Songdog sings an ancient song. It echoed over the Western plains and deserts long before man was there to hear it. The singer and the song have survived the mastodon, the mammoth, the elephants and the camels that once roamed this continent. The coyote’s voice has not been stilled. Not even by man...In ’The Coyote,’ the reader will find many books in one. It is a biography that traces the life story of one coyote from birth to adulthood; an historical and current description of predator control; a sometimes violent adventure story; and, most of all, an examination of creature physchology."–Anaheim Bulletin

"The viewpoints of both rancher and environmentalist are presented in this intelligent, often shocking book on the emotional coyote controversy. The amazing adaptability of this small predator leads the author to question humankind’s right to interfere with nature. Unusual illustrations depict the coyote’s desert life."–American West

4.0 out of 5 stars Everything you always wanted to know about the coyote, November 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Coyote: Defiant Songdog of the West (Paperback)
This is an interesting, informative book about coyotes for anyone interested in the smartest, most adaptable of all the mammals. Whether you're a hunter or someone just interested in nature, this is a good place to begin to learn about the coyote.

The book suffers from somewhat amateurish illustrations, but is otherwise the most accurate book on coyotes I've found.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE MYSTICAL ANIMAL, September 17, 2009
I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN ARIZONA, AND IN MY 60 YEARS I HAVE HAD A FEW SIGHTINGS OF THE COYOTE. EVEN IN ALL THOSE YEARS I STILL STOP AND WATCH THE COYOTE GO BY. I AM PART NATIVE AMERICAN AND I BELIEVE IN THE SPIRIT THE COYOTE POSSESSES. AS WITH SOME TRIBES HE IS EVIL AND WITH OTHERS HE IS NOT. ALL I KNOW IS WHEN I SEE A COYOTE TURN AROUND AND LOOK AT ME I DO NOT STAIR BACK.
AT MY FIRST HOUSE IN TUCSON THERE WAS A BIG WASH IN THE BACK. COYOTES WOULD TRAVEL THAT WASH ALL THE TIME, ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT IN THE SUMMER. THE COYOTES WOULD START TO SING IN THE WASH, AND AT TIMES IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL WE WOULD THINK IT WAS A TRIBE COME BACK FROM THE PAST TO FINISH A DANCE. I WAS ALWAYS ENTRANCED BY THE LOUD, MELODIC SONGS OF THE COYOTE. THERE WERE TIMES I THOUGHT IT WAS AN ANCIENT OPERA,TAKING ME UP AND DOWN WITH THE COYOTES MELODIES.
THE COYOTE IS WITH NO DOUBT THE SURVIVER OF THE DESERT, AND MAN CAN NEVER CHASE HIM AWAY. WHEN YOU HEAR THE SONGS OF THE COYOTE, REMEMBER THEY HAVE BEEN SINGING THOSE SONGS FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS, AND WILL ALWAYS DO SO. WHEN YOU HEAR THE COYOTE SING, IT IS HIS SKILL AS A SURVIVOR OVER MANS WILLINGNESS TO DESTROY HIM THAT MAKES ME SIT UP WITH RESPECT WHEN EVER I SEE HIM. ALWAYS GIVE HIM SPACE WHEN HE LOOKS AT YOU AND HE WILL DO THE SAME TO YOU. I ALWAYS THOUGHT THE COYOTE WAS THE SPIRIT OF A MAN returning,WHO KNOWS, THEY ARE TRULY MAGICAL.
