Editorial Reviews

You can do a lot in one summer. If you're 16-year-old Callie you can make new friends. Get a chip or two slapped off your shoulder. Take part in the workaday world. Even transform the daily bundle of attitude you carry into solid character. In short, you can learn lessons that last a lifetime. Callie goes from angry teen to confident young woman when she's sent from New York to Utah's red-hilled Coyote Arrow Ranch for a Coyote Summer. At the heart of her transformation is a 1,500-pound secret shared with 17-year-old Rafe: they've rescued as abused stallion, hidden him in the hills and are training him for the upcoming Crown Invitational Callie is finally discovering what it's like to care for something other than her own problems. The race awaits. She's already a winner in the human race.

4.0 out of 5 stars A "must see" for adolescent horse fans August 31, 1999

Format:VHS Tape
My daughter absolutely loved this movie and I actually enjoyed it myself. A little unrealistic, but hey, isn't there enough "reality" these days?

"Coyote Summer" is a cute family movie about a teenage girl's transformational summer. After her research grant proposal is approved, a single mom leaves the country for the summer months. Her teenage daughter, Callie, has a bad attitude about nearly everything, and because of her history of breaking rules and lying her mother can neither leave her alone nor take Callie along with her to England. This creates the opportunity for the city-girl from the East to be thrown into the unfamiliar environment of the Western desert, among people who work hard and are neither impressed nor intimidated by her. It is in this environment that Callie discovers herself actually caring about the fate of a horse, and while on the quest to save him she develops friendships and finds herself with a purpose, a goal, and a changed heart.

The DVD case has a "Parents Guide For Family Discussion" on the back cover, which lists four questions to stimulate discussion about character virtues, based upon scenes in the movie. One example is, "How could you tell that Rafe had respect for his elders? How can you show respect for your elders?"

The only difficulties I have with this movie are unfortunately rather common ones in the plot. The first problem is when characters engage in wrong behavior for the right reasons, and because everything turns out all right in the end the characters receive no negative or corrective consequences for their wrong behavior (ex: lying, theft, property damage, etc.). A second common scenario is when children engage in elaborate and sometimes dangerous schemes without involving or even telling an adult, or the adult involved hides the activity from the child's parents or guardians.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good... August 2, 1999
By Kate
Format:VHS Tape
This is a really good movie for kids and adults. It's a story of a teen in termoil who's life is changed by a 1500 lbs. friend. A little unbelieveable on how she can learn to 'ride' a wild horse in a few days.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a December 28, 2004
Format:VHS Tape
When Callie's (Vinessa Shaw) mom goes to London on business, the self-absorbed citified teen is sent to Utah's Coyote Arrow Ranch to spend the summer. There she meets a young Indian ranch hand named Rafe (Adam Beach), and Kyla, a wild horse who presents a challenge. Callie decides to train the spooky stud for barrel racing, and enters him in a big show at the annual fair. Over the eventful summer, Callie learns the importance of responsibility and what it's like to care for someone other than herself. Nothing new, but not a bad kids' movie.

A pleasant family movie that deserves a second look. Love the western background for the film and the message of the story.
