4.0 out of 5 stars engaging Navaho police procedural
On the Navaho Reservation in New Mexico, everyone is appalled by the brutal assault of Ervin Benally. Most people assume the beating was in direct reaction to Benally planning to install StarTalk on the reservation. This satellite phone system would enable instant cheap communication across the reservation.

2.0 out of 5 stars Children's Book
I felt like I was reading a child's book. Good story but not real exciting. But then I never liked Tony Hillerman either.I will stick to Margaret Truman.

4.0 out of 5 stars engaging Navaho police procedural, October 4, 2008
On the Navaho Reservation in New Mexico, everyone is appalled by the brutal assault of Ervin Benally. Most people assume the beating was in direct reaction to Benally planning to install StarTalk on the reservation. This satellite phone system would enable instant cheap communication across the reservation.

Navajo Tribal Police Officer Ella Clah investigates the brutal incident. She quickly finds the Fierce Ones vigilantes involved, but is unable to figure out why as this group is known for instant eye for an eye justice. Ella soon realizes someone has purposely set up the beating and the vigilante group as a distraction for her and other law enforcement investigators, but once again remains in the dark as to whom and why.

Although there are too many cul de sac false clues followed, the latest Team Thurlo Navaho police procedural is an engaging and enthralling mystery. Ella is a terrific lead protagonist as she struggles with a case in which each step forward in progress seems to lead to two diagonally giant steps back. However, the star of COYOTE'S WIFE and this strong investigative series is the Navaho as the audience obtains a deep look into life on the New Mexico reservation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent Characterization and Mystery..., March 22, 2009

(VINE VOICE)
Still I'd give it 3.5 stars. Parts of the story were downright boring. I seemed like one long streak of bad things happening, with the cops chasing after shadows and arriving just in time to process the scene. I didn't see that there was much special about the heroine, just a harried woman who's life revolves around her job and her kid. She talked tough, but there wasn't really much action to back up that tough girl image.

The thing that kind of bothered me about the book is that I often felt like the authors were sticking in dialogue to explain points that didn't really need explaining. It made the dialogue seem stilted and unnatural.

The plotting was decent, but not as captivating as it could be. There was a whole lot of explaining that went on instead of discovery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Waiting for Ella Clah, November 2, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Every year I wait for the next Ella Clah installment. Maybe it was me, but this one, Coyote's Wife, was a bit fuzzy in places. I had to go back several times and reread pages to make sure I hadn't missed some detail or plot element. At the end, it just sorta fizzled out, but A&D Thurlo like to leave readers hanging a bit in anticipation of next year's Ella Clah book. Nonetheless, I will reread the book once I get it back from my sister. And of course look forward to next year's Ella Clah mystery.

Rather like all her other stories which never reach the level of Hillerman's books from which the style is derived.
