Five Tips for Buying a Heater
Choosing a space heater is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let's break it down a little to make the process easier.

What are the different types of space heaters?

  • Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.
  • Forced-air heaters use a fan to blow air that has been warmed by metal or ceramic heating elements. A forced-air heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but can be noisy.
  • Convection heaters draw cold air from the floor; the air is warmed by heating coils and emitted from the top of the heater. A convection heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but also can be noisy.
  • Radiators work by heating oil enclosed in a reservoir, gradually heating the surrounding air. If heating speed isn't an issue, you might want to opt for a radiator. These are extremely quiet and effective--perfect for bedrooms.

Should I buy an electric or a combustion model?
If you want a heater that will be available in emergencies, or that can heat areas larger than a single room, choose a "combustion" model--one that is powered by a gas or fuel like propane, kerosene, natural gas, or diesel. Which fuel type you choose depends largely on convenience and local availability. For example, diesel would be appropriate for a heater you take with you on long car trips.

How powerful a heater do I need?
Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you need:

  • Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
  • Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's good.
The resulting number is a ballpark figure for how many BTU you'll need.

Do space heaters cost a lot to operate?
As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. To ensure energy efficiency, a thermostat is a must-have feature for any heater. For radiant heaters, models with a 360 degree heating surface can heat larger spaces. If you need a forced-air heater, models with ceramic elements tend to be more efficient.

Are space heaters a fire hazard?
Space heaters are implicated in about 25,000 residential fires every year. To ensure proper safety, always follow the manufacturer's usage instructions and fill out the warranty card to receive informational updates from the manufacturer. Also, look for extra safety features such as an automatic shutoff switch that can shut down the unit if, for example, it gets upended. In addition, choose a model where the heating element is adequately enclosed within the unit.

WHAT YOU WILL FEEL:
For safety reasons, this in-shoe warmer is designed to heat up to just above blood heat (normal body temperature). It does NOT create noticeably hot temperatures, since elevated temperatures in contact with the body may cause injury. COZY FEET works by keeping the temperature inside the shoe at a comfortably normal, NOT dangerously hot temperature.

I should have believed others that had reported that this product didn't work but thought I would take a chance.

When I looked closer, I saw that one solder joint was broken, and the wires had at some point been stuck back in place with a square of electrical tape.
Viane Frye
I was hoping these would help keep my feet warm during the shift but unfortunately even with brand new batteries there was little to no heat.

I agree with the other reviewers that these inserts are cheaply made and the battery packs are a bit awkward, but I have severe problems with cold/numb feet, and these inserts have made it possible for me to be outdoors in the winter for the first time in over thirty years. You must be careful replacing the batteries, as the contacts in the battery holders are VERY fragile. The inserts are paper thin, so they can be used even in tight-fitting shoes, unlike battery-heated socks, which are too bulky to fit in any shoes or boots. The inserts are also better than the single-use toe warmers, because if your feet get too warm, you can simply unplug the wires from the batteries. I hope this company will improve the design and quality of these inserts--I'd gladly pay more for a better product. In the meantime, twenty bucks for these inserts is a good deal. Just make sure to also buy a AA battery charger.

I got this for my boyfriend for christmas, and he hasn't had alot of time to judge the product since it's been warm out, but these are his initial responses:

Pro: Heats up his feet quickly and they stay warm.

Cons: They can get uncomfortably hot if left on for too long. The strap to hold the batteries isn't uncomfortable or problematic, but it is inconvienent. Also, the shoe insert will slide backwards, so unless you want to adhere it to your shoe, it will become very irritating.

These foot warmers are wonderful. The only negative thing I can say is that the wires can be annoying, but once you have them on, you don't notice anything except for your warm toes. You can conveniently turn them on and off as needed. I get a solid 4-5 hours out of a set of rechargeable batteries. This is my first winter with them so I cannot say how durable they are, however even if I have to buy new ones every year--they are well worth it.

These things are designed for 3.0V from two alkaline batteries. The power they put out is related to the square of the voltage, so with alkaline lets just say it puts out 9W.

But rechargeable AA's have 1.2V each. Which means two puts out 2.4V. Thus the power output from a set of rechargeable batteries are 5.8W, or less by a third.

I went through the effort of getting a triple AA pack and a chip that changes the 3.6V output to 3.0V and could handle the amperage to get 9W even with rechargeables. Not a task to be undertaken unless you have a good understanding of electrical circuits.

Once I did this, my wife, a displaced Texan in Iowa, won't go outside in the winter without them. And eventhough she has to replace the batteries each day, they are rechargeable.

I just wish you could buy a set designed for this.

My first impression was how fragile the wiring connections looked, so I reinforced the weak-looking spots with some electrical tape before I put these in my shoes. I've been using one set this way for >2 years (~once/week during the winter), and they're still going strong. I LOVE them. Even though I have Raynaud's syndrome, I can be out in the coldest weather with no concern that my feet will get cold. I'm sure that the heated insoles that cost 5 times as much are more durable and more convenient to use, but these do the job just fine.

PROS:
WARM FEET
thin enough to fit comfortably in most shoes

CONS:
delicate construction
they gobble AA batteries (I get about 6 hours of use for a set of 4)
battery packs around your ankles are a little cumbersome
when they get too warm, you need to disconnect the wire to turn them off - this is easy, but make sure you tuck the end of the wire in the top of your sock, or you can step on it and break it.

These are an excellent option to keep your toes warm in the winter if you have poor circulation like me. They cost a bit more than the chemical warmers, but quickly become more economical since you can use them over and over. Unlike chemical warmers they keep working even when your footwear is basically airtight like many well-insulated boots.

Runtime can also be as long as you want since you can switch batteries, but I get about 3 hrs on one set of batteries. They also take standard AA (including rechargeable) so you don't have to purchase expensive battery packs like some alternatives.

They are best used in an already warm piece of footwear though. They don't get super hot, but I find them to be the perfect temp for helping with poor circulation on cold winter days.

I ordered these foot warmers because my toes get cold and numb very easily in cool temperatures. The battery packs that strap to your legs were awkward and bulky and quickly slipped down my legs to my ankles as I walked. I felt some warmth when I first plugged the "cozy feet" in, but could not detect any heat a few minutes later. I returned the item to Amazon for a full refund.
