I listen to a lot of electronica music and buy almost all of the CDs on Amazon. As such, the Amazon computer knows of my tastes and frequently makes some excellent suggestions for possible listening and purchase. One such selection was the Cozza Frenzy CD by Bassnectar. Over three years since "Underground Communication" destroyed woofers everywhere, Lorin Ashton - aka Bassnectar - returns to wreak havoc on sound systems the world over with "Cozza Frenzy." Though not quite up to "Underground Communication's" masterpiece status, Bassnectar's latest effort is definitely worth shelling out your duckets and the accompanying risk of destroying your sound system. The collection of 15 songs runs the gamut from dirty, heavy grinds to playful dance-suitable, and even a little chillaxin thrown in for good measure. The album's title track blasts in two versions, the second of which is definitely superior and more in line with what Lorin plays live. In fact, if you've been lucky enough to catch a pre-Cozza Bassnectar performance (whether on the playa at Burning Man or in a medium sized local venue), you'll definitely recognize almost every track as he experimented and tweaked them prior to its release. "Boombox," for example, was churned out three different ways at performances we attended over the 2009 summer, while "I Am Laser" turned up during a sunrise set at Simpler Times (the DoLab's musical contribution to Burning Man). About the only tune that'll have you scratching your head is the odd "I Wish I Was a Hipster," which is flat-out awful and takes away a full star for its inclusion. We were also annoyed by the stock "eagle cry" on the otherwise perfect "I Am Laser," but these are personal quibbles that probably wouldn't even get noticed by most listeners. Other than those blips, however, you'll find this pounding set of tracks everything you'd come to expect from the Wizard of WOMP WOMP.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cozza Frenzy (Audio CD)
I listen to a lot of electronica music and buy almost all of the CDs on Amazon. As such, the Amazon computer knows of my tastes and frequently makes some excellent suggestions for possible listening and purchase. One such selection was the Cozza Frenzy CD by Bassnectar. I bought it, and am not particularly satisfied with the selection.

When I listen to electronic music I especially enjoy the bass end of the scale. I could cite albums by Daft Punk or Deadmau5 which are just excellent! Well, with a name like Bassnectar, what do you expect? Well, it delivers and there's no question about that! In fact, a lot of listeners/reviewers issue warnings about your stereo! Well, those warnings are probably from people with very low quality playback equipment. I have a modest stereo, but it turns out quite high quality sound. I have a 100 watt per channel receiver/amplifier, two three way speaker sets with 12-inch woofers and an 80-watt powered subwoofer. Believe me, when I put Bassnectar on at fairly high volume it's enough to bring in complaints from neighbors living within a 100-foot circle around my house. And my stereo holds up very well, thank you. Oh, and by the way, I play my stereo with both the bass and treble set at neutral levels.

There's something to liking bass, and having way too much bass. Bassnectar opts for the latter. The bass on some of the songs is just way too much. Even at modest volumes, I have items rattling all over the house. The bass is so heavy that it literally drowns out the other sounds on the CD. Well, what do you do? Personally, I get fatigued in listening to it and I'm a guy who likes deep, rich bass sounds. None of the songs on the CD are particularly strong and I would not be listening to the music for long even if the bass were at a normal level.

It's an interesting recording and might appeal to certain people for several different reasons. For one, the term "Boom Box" is mentioned in several tracks and probably for good reason. I can see this music appealing to guys who carry around huge boom boxes (with 12-inch woofers on their shoulder and playing the music for the benefit of everyone within a 50-foot radius. Second, it might have great appeal to those with very powerful car stereos who like to turn the music up so that people 2 to 3 lanes away on the freeway can listen in on their selections. Third, and this would include me, it might be used by people who would like to demonstrate to interested listeners just how completely overwhelming bass can be on a good stereo system. Anyway, If you really love bass, this is it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, March 11, 2011
This review is from: Cozza Frenzy (Audio CD)
The king of "'wobble' bass," Bassnectar knows what he's doing. It wouldn't be completely inaccurate to call this album "all over the place," as he seems to have pulled sounds from every direction. "Teleport Massive" is an excellent track that could also pass for a club beat. This is Classic Bassnectar, you can't go wrong. They will also be playing many of this summer's music festivals, one being Camp Bisco. Be sure to check them out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Genius, January 25, 2011
This review is from: Cozza Frenzy (MP3 Download)
Bassnectar has long been an amorphous musical project by Lorin Ashton. It doesn't adhere to rules, guidelines, or boundaries. The sound is pure and many times makes you wanna move them dancing feet! Cozza Frenzy is just this - music that will inspire people to cause-a-frenzy and just flat out RAGE! I look forward to seeing Bassnectar soon in Asheville, NC as part of his mini-festival Basscenter 2 as well as at WAKARUSA 2011 in AK!!! You can check out the rest of the lineup for wakarusa (electronic/dj music lovers) at [...]
