Book Description

Crônicas Brasileiras is a Portuguese reader containing a collection of short, lively compositions that originally appeared in Brazilian newspapers, magazines, and anthologies and were written by some of Brazil's most distinguished contemporary authors. Somewhat similar to newspaper columns and sometimes resembling short stories or essays, these entertaining crônicas deal with various aspects of life in Brazil, particularly urban life and especially that of Rio de Janeiro. Designed to assist students in developing a reading, speaking, and writing knowledge of Portuguese as it is used in present-day Brazil, the book includes explanatory notes, a variety of exercises and drills, and a vocabulary.

The editors have tested these crônicas in actual classroom situations at different levels and have found them suitable for use as early as the first year, after students have completed study of any elementary Portuguese grammar. Because of the intrinsic interest and the lively colloquial style of the crônicas they can also be used in more advanced classes, as a basis for conversation and composition or for study of representative contemporary Brazilian writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stories that give insight of Brazilian culture., July 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Crônicas Brasileiras (University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies) (Paperback)
This book is, I would say, at an intermediate level of Portuguese. The stories are great and the format of the book is excellent with questions following each short story. There are also a number of b/w pictures and drawings that add to the experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mutio Útil, June 18, 2006
This review is from: Crônicas Brasileiras (University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies) (Paperback)
Crônicas Brasileiras são muito mais do que "Brazilian stories." O humor é uma grande parte duma Crônica... e este livro é maravilhoso. Tem lições com cada crônica que ajuda o estudante com coisas gramaticais. Tenho aprendido muito deste livrinho do Brasil y a língua portuguesa. Todos devem lê-lo.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book For Intermediate Portuguese Students, February 17, 2008
This review is from: Crônicas Brasileiras (University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies) (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for intermediate students of Brazilian Portuguese. The crônicas are excellent and provide a great deal of knowledge on Brazilian culture, life and ideas. The one criticism is that the grammar lessons could be a bit meatier, but they do provide an excellent overview of concepts and provide some new ones as well. The readings are accompanied by a great dictionary (some language books choose to skimp in their dictionary, but this book is very generous). Overall, a very good book for those that want to improve their reading comprehension in Portuguese.
