I just hate to see such a great artist have a poor review on what is most likely another great item to own. K-Os' previous two albums, Joyful Rebellion and EXIT, are easily in my top 20 favorite albums of all time. You can slap a classification on them for being Hip-Hop and find them in the Rap section of your local music stores, but really it's so much more than that.
He constantly bounces back from well-written, witty lyrics, fitting to Hip-Hop, B-Boy communities. Then over to an R&B like string of lyrics. I'm bias to his voice cause it's very clear and easy to understand, and helps carry the songs along nicely. I'm also a huge fan of what he has to say. He doesn't 'rap' about car rims and tramps, instead he talks about (not always) such things as "thinking" and "thought". Our exsistence, philosophy, but not in a stiff or boring kind of way, a way you would want to actually listen to it either in a car or just chilling out with friends/dancing, etc.
On top of this, he's just a musical genious, to me anyway. To combine his great lyrics with such a diverse array of 'beats' is amazing. He has some great friends who are very talented with instruments. Another nice thing about his albums. While some tracks are heavily done in the studio done with all the cuts and drops expected from decks and synthasizers, he uses a huge array of -real- instruments. And some of his songs have a very live feel to them and don't seem very polished or touched at all, as real as it comes.
About this product though, "Crabbuckit" is just one of the many great tracks on Joyful Rebellion. I purchased Joyful Rebellion after hearing "The Love Song" and "B-Boy Stance" which had me hooked from there. But upon buying this album I realized the rest of it is very different. Immediately I was a bit turned off, unsure as to what I got msyelf into. But a couple more rotations in my CD player and this album became a classic must have for me, and later resulted in me buying his album "Exit" which showcases my first single I had heard of his, "Superstarr Pt. 2". Wow how easily I sidetrack haha. "Crabbuckit" is a great song. Period. In my opionion it perfectly blends mo-town, southern Jazz, R and B, Hip-Hop and folk all into one great song. And while I encourage you to listen to it and get this single, I say just go get the album "Joyful Rebellion".
Please don't hold my long rant and late night grammer against this artist. I also lack a lot of musical knowledge and terms so my review may be weak in that sense as well. But K-Os deserves so much praise that I had to attempt to write this. I hope he remains where he is in his status. Not mainstream, appearing on TRL (despite it netting him more cash, sorry K-Os :/), but right where he is so he keeps writing such great music. Yeah, I expect more from you if you happen to read this :D You said it yourself you tried the Exit, but you "couldn't do it the minute
It flowed from my lips
Futures can't exist"
You know you can't stop thinking, and in turn you can't stop writing, and in turnnnnn, can't stop making such great music. Whether you were intended to do it or not, you're good at it, so keep it up.
