I bought this for my mother. Previously she'd been cracking walnuts with a hammer and cinder block and I always worried that she'd miss and smash her hand. Now, I don't worry about it. The lever applies plenty of force to crack open even the hardest of aged black walnuts, and being cast iron I have little worries of it ever breaking.

Great little gadget and it certainly seems more.... substantial, than a lot of the other nutcrackers I found.

Had to replace the hinge pin on this little tool. Apparently the one that came with it was a soft iron pin that warped fairly quickly and rendered the tool useless. I cut the pin off and replaced it with grade 8 hardware: no problems yet and I don't expect any. So, be wary that you may have to replace the hinge pin after moderate use.

I gave this Nut Cracker to my brother for Christmas (2009) so I have not used it personally. My brother started using it right off and he loves it. He uses it to crack shagbark hickory nuts and it works very well. He's only been using it for about a month so I don't know about long term reliability of the product but so far so good.

Will crack anything you feed it, small to large nuts, you name it. Strong, well made, and capable of any nut cracking you want to do.

The iron nut cracker potion of this product is great & effective for cracking hickory nuts. The wooden piece it's on is not very attractive. By the picture it looked like more than just a stained slab of wood that the nut cracker had been screwed too.

Does work good on Hickory nuts. My wife has been using it she dies have a little difficulty cracking larger hickory nuts as they have a harder shell than the smaller variety
