Editorial Reviews

Crackers stars Donald Sutherland, Sean Penn and Jack Warden as part of a bunch of crazy, off-the-wall characters who would buy the American Dream...if only they could afford the down payment! There's Weslake, out of work but never short of hope; Boardwalk, a pimp with a heart of gold and a baby; Ramon, a part-time electrician who specializes in hot wiring cars; Dillard, a permanent resident of outer space; Turtle, a little guy with a big appetite; and Maxine, a diligent meter maid who's on the make. They're all "customers" of Melvin Garvey's whose pawn shop holds the answer to their prayers... the gold at the end of the rainbow. With the right direction, they might bungle their way to success... if just one of them knew where they were going!

3.0 out of 5 stars Style and No Substance February 25, 2013

"Crackers" aspires to be offbeat but only succeeds at being mundane. It's not a bad film just an eminently forgettable one. Shocking when you consider the film was helmed by Louis Malle coming off the success of "Atlantic City" and has a pretty good cast. None is more wasted than Sean Penn who plays a dimbulb good ole boy. Sole redeeming qualities are the turns by Jack Warden as a genial pawnbroker and Christine Baranski as a randy meter maid. The film's denouement is pretty clever. Too bad the rest of the film didn't demonstrate as much wit.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment given all the talent involved January 21, 2012
By pemory
Format:DVD
I stumbled across a description of this film a few years back and thought "How did I miss this one?!? Louis Malle, Donald Sutherland, Sean Penn, Jack Warden, & Wallace Shawn in San Francisco and I've never seen it (or even heard of it)?!??!" Well, turns out there's a good reason why: it's supposed to be a funny, breezy film, but it's actually very dull and joyless. Moreover, the soundtrack is wretched 80s synth sounds punctuated by a cacophonous Michael McDonald tune that plays over the credits. It's also a boring, pointless film and a challenge to watch so much talent return so little; almost as if no one tried very hard. Easily the worst performance I've seen for Donald Sutherland. On the other hand, Wallace Shawn and Sean Penn are quite good. However, if you're curious about this based upon who was involved...don't bother.

I love to find Donald Sutherland's earlier or little known gem of a movie like this one. Have been looking for it for quite some time on DVD. Would recommend this seller
