5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking the Boy's Club Code -Excellent!, November 6, 2009
This review is from: Cracking The Boy's Club Code: The Woman's Guide to Being Heard and Valued in the Workplace (Paperback)
Having been in the corporate world for many years, I can easily relate to the workplace scenarios Mike discusses in his book. Mike explains in easy to understand terms the differences in the thinking process of men and women. Once you understand these differences, you will know how to communicate effectively not only in the corporate world but with men in general. The book is easy to read with exercises to assist in relating the information to your own situation. I highly recommend this book to women of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Right on the money!, August 6, 2011
This book is great for anyone in the workplace! Since reading it I have learned new and effective ways to speak up, interact with my male bosses and even enter a meeting. The book gives an insiders view into the male mind. I believe men could also improve the way in which they work with women by reading this book. I have always worked in male dominated industries (finance and sports) and always thought I did a good job of dealing with the men, but the book has made me more confident in my ability to communicate in person, over email and on the phone. I look at it with a whole new perspective. Great Book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Creating A Postive Impact, August 14, 2010
This review is from: Cracking The Boy's Club Code: The Woman's Guide to Being Heard and Valued in the Workplace (Paperback)
Are you a woman wondering how to make a more positive impact at work? I suggest reading Cracking the Boy's Club Code. This insightful book, written by Michael Johnson, delivers straight forward advice on how to improve your communication and develop a winning style. Johnson, a corporate trainer, who has taught thousands of people, created this book due to the encouragement of many who participated in his classes.

There are notable advantages to this particular book. First, the author shares tips that his former students employeed successfully in all types of work settings. Second, the recommendations are concise, including rationales, and examples. Also there are "workbook" pages where one may write down specifics relating to the the reader's own experience and work setting. This format is a wonderful way to encourage self reflection. Additionally I found the book contains key advice that is most relevant in the todays everchanging work environment.

Johnson's book can be read in a couple of hours or if one prefers it might be a a moe leisurely "read." It is also a title that a groups of friends might want to consider for a small group book discussion. I highly recommend this title to all women who want to make a more positive impact at work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Woman's Secret Weapon to Decoding Male Behavior at Work, July 24, 2010
This review is from: Cracking The Boy's Club Code: The Woman's Guide to Being Heard and Valued in the Workplace (Paperback)
Mike Johnson's book is spot-on! It's the Rosetta Stone for understanding how and why men behave as they do in the workplace. Respectful, engaging and fun, the advice in this book gives women a template for creating more win-win situations with male colleagues. There are no platitudes here and the author never (thankfully!) tells women to behave more like men. On the contrary - the advice is doable, practical and designed to help women get results by also honoring their own integrity and authenticity. The author, who raised two daughters as a single dad, truly wants women to succeed. With its many a-has and ha-has, this book is a great and helpful read.

I have had the pleasure of attending a couple of Michael Johnson's seminars - he is right on! Great tools to help you succeed on more of a level playing field. Too bad his books are not part of the educational systems school books. I highly recommend his book and seminars. I have shared his insight and recomendations with many of my friends. The book makes great gifts for all - because you go back to it as things in your life - happen. Hey Michael - hopefully you are working on your "next" book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!!, May 18, 2010

This review is from: Cracking The Boy's Club Code: The Woman's Guide to Being Heard and Valued in the Workplace (Paperback)

Cracking the Boys Club Code is an excellent read for everyone. The author presents the male perspective in a way that is not deprecating and provides a useful lense into the masculine mind. I appreciate how the author describes the male need for tools and "things" during the hunter gather phase of human life and how that need has translated down into today's man. Men look to things and tools as a way to get into relationship where women get into relationship through relationship. This important distinction helps me as a man to understand the subtle difference between men and women's relationship building methods. This distinction presented by the author Mike Johnson points simply to the difference of personal approach and does not engage in blame, judgment or that one way is better than another. I encourage men to read the book to understand our own life perspectives by learning how we engage women, each other and ourselves.

I have shared this book with the women in my life and they all have received useful insights into the male mind. The book sparked great conversations with my girlfriend as she shared with me her work experiences. She comments on "just the headlines" sometimes when we communicate to remind herself of how men percieve conversation. I want to thank Mike Johnson for producing this excellent work on gender relations. I look forward to his book on men as he mentioned in Cracking the Boys Club Code.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who Knew???, April 17, 2010

This review is from: Cracking The Boy's Club Code: The Woman's Guide to Being Heard and Valued in the Workplace (Paperback)
The title caught my interest right away. As a women working for the past 12 years in the world of men, mostly engineers, I have found it annoying and exhausting!

Michael's book kept me up reading until I could finish, both laughing and having many 'aha' moments.

Now I feel bad about the judgements I've placed on men in the workplace. Their love of rules, leadership, striving the be King of the Hill are all traits I use to role my eyes at. Now, as I listen to them behave exactly the way Michael said they would, I still role my eyes, but giggle, and think, "Who knew?" Now I do.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!, April 14, 2010

This review is from: Cracking The Boy's Club Code: The Woman's Guide to Being Heard and Valued in the Workplace (Paperback)
Cracking the Boy's Club Code is a must read for women in business--in fact for women dealing with men in any capacity! It's quick, and uses great examples that are SO memorable. I like the tone as well--never condescending and always upbeat and encouraging. Though at first I balked at the idea that I have to learn THEIR code, when explained as having an advantage in a different culture--what you would do when dealing with an overseas client of course--it made perfect sense.

Lots of dog-eared pages--I have learned more from this book than from a lifetime of dealing with men (and even a little Mars and Venus)!

Thanks so much Mike Johnson!

Practically written as a resource for women, to get a glimpse into the male mind.
Revealing information in this text.
Next edition, I'd like to see information on teaming with men, in the remote workforce, where phone and computer exchanges prevail.

This review is from: Cracking The Boy's Club Code: The Woman's Guide to Being Heard and Valued in the Workplace (Paperback)
This book is not only helpful for the workplace but also in relationships with males in general. It gave me some great tools that I was able to immediately put to use in my sales calls and interactions with my husband. I've always thought that I communicated well with men but this really gave me some additional background on why they behave and react to women the way that do. Additionally, I like how the book provided a step-by-step method to communicate more effectively with males via email.
