I'm an AP Chemistry teacher who has taken the time to purchase and compare the various test prep books for this exam. I started out by looking at the Amazon ratings, and I only ordered test prep books that had an average rating of at least four stars. That left me with three books for AP Chem. The 5 steps book, the AP Chem for Dummies book, and the Princeton Review. I admit I bought the 2012 version of all three; they generally don't change much from year to year and I feel comfortable extrapolating the 2013 rating from the 2012 editions (which were much cheaper bought used on my teacher salary!)

Of the three, I find the Princeton Review book to be the best overall. They do a good job of mirroring actual AP Chemistry exam questions, and I detected no lapses in the content coverage. What's even better, though, is the authors of this book made a conscious effort to exclude things that you just don't need to know. The biggest problems with the 5 steps and the Dummies books was that there was just too much stuff. You're buying a review book to help you pass the exam, and learning anything beyond that is not useful in a test prep book, generally. The 5 steps book also had really bad practice questions, while the Dummies book wasn't particularly user friendly when it came to the formatting.

The only weakness the Princeton Review book had is that it really is, at its core, a supplemental text. There's not a great deal of time spent on actually teaching the material (more worked-out examples would have been nice). The bones are quite good, but I really feel like it's best used as a companion to a full-on AP Chemistry course.

As a AP Chem student, I was looking for a study book that could aid me learn the different concepts as I studied them in class. The greatest plus point of this book is that it takes every concept you learn in AP Chem and simplifies it with charts, diagrams, etc. This makes it easier to understand your class notes!

Another great aspect of this book is that it tells you the possibility of this particular section appearing on the exam, and how many questions there may be. This is great because I can easily emphasize certain topics more than others.

The book covers almost every topic you learn in class, from bonding, IMFs, atomic structure to hydrocarbons and thermochemistry. Each topic is also followed by questions which reinforce the material. I love how each topic emphasizes major points that you need to know for the exam rather than unnecessarily detailing details that do not appear on the exam itself.

The book also includes two practice exams. I have not gotten the chance to do them yet, however, I will post an update when I do. I am hoping they are realistic to the exam.

Other than this book, I would recommend using the site, chemmybear.com. They include tons of practice material which I have used numerous times, and their questions are challenging and realistic.

I would recommend this book to any AP Chem student. It is a great supplement to their learning.

SO helpful, LOADS better than the Barron's book that I owned previously. Chapters are very short and condensed, and thankfully simplify a lot of the chemistry jargon that plague other review books. Everything I needed to know for the AP exam was here - I felt 100% prepared

I myself wasn't able to use it very much but my friend who also owns it says that it helped him tremendously in his quest to get a 5. I suggest it to anyone serious about their AP score.

Since it was my son who used this book I will share what he had to say. He already had a lot of notes he was reviewing, He and his friends found the book to be an excellent resource for double checking facts, taking sample exams and adding to their notes. He would highly recommend buying this book for anyone taking the AP Chemical exam.
