3.0 out of 5 stars Good for chemistry, bad for test prep August 6, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
NOTE: This review is now outdated. There is a revised 2014 edition out now which matches the content of the new exam much more effectively. In the interests of full disclosure, I was hired to help edit this book after the editors at TPR read my review here on Amazon. I put a lot of time into researching the changes and did my best to get the book updated to match the new exam. If you are in the market for a AP Chemistry review book, I recommend buying the Revised 2014 edition, and I welcome any and all feedback on it!

**************************************

As an AP Chemistry teacher, I am very interested in assessing the quality of the various test prep books out there in order to give my students the best possible advice when it comes to purchasing one. The Princeton Review guide was hands-down the best AP Chemistry test prep book for the 2013 exam, but the College Board is implementing a redesign of the AP Chemistry curriculum for 2014, so the old AP Chem test prep books are now effectively out of date. I pre-ordered the 2014 Princeton Review to see what efforts the publisher made to update the content.

The good news is they made some effort to change their book to reflect the new exam. The bad news is that they did not go nearly far enough. I have some sympathy with the editors; fully updating their book is not an easy task. However, there is some information about the exam which has been publicly accessible for over a year now which is not reflected in this guide. I'll break my review down into two sections: content and practice exams.

1) Content- This is where the editors really dropped the ball. There are things that are quite explicitly excluded from the new exam- for instance, quantum numbers- that the guide still covers.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not up to date August 10, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you are looking for a practice review book that is updated to match the new 2014 AP Chemistry Exam, this is not it. The concepts of chemistry are still there, but this is not an accurate reflection of the types of questions the new exam will contain.

2.0 out of 5 stars AP chemistry practice book August 25, 2013
By stan
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Pretty much the same as the past book. I expected much more in the area of the type of questions which we should expect on the new AP chemistry exam. A number of times it is stated that they didn't have the information at printing. All they really did was arrange the past material under new headings of "Big Idea".

1.0 out of 5 stars PRACTICE EXAMS ARE NOT UPDATED August 6, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Do not buy this if you have an older version of an AP chemistry review book. The questions do not match the sample exam provided by College Board. There are no sample multiple choice problems that are sets of questions that go together. There are no particle diagram questions. I purchased the new AP review book, I have 5 different older versions, expecting that the questions would be updated. The practice exam includes question types that are NO LONGER part of the AP chemistry exam- the beginnign matching questions.

There have been changes in the topics covered in the AP exam, but that is availible free on the College Board website. This is no more that the older version with 2014 on the cover. If it were possible, I would give this zero stars.

Please do not buy this product...
There is nothing wrong with the Chemistry - but it does NOT accurately reflect the new curriculum or format of the test...

They should have definitely waited until they had the correct information....
