I reviewed this book more than 3 times before the exam.
After that, I felt somewhat confident about the exam. but actual exam I took today(4/2, 2005) showed that the real exam is much much harder than this well -writen practice book. Some advanced topic, topology, real anaylsis, abstract algrebra is way way hard. You better review or study with actual textbook. DON'T prepare for the exam with ONLY THIS BOOK.

I took the GRE math subject with this book as my only preparation. It prepared me well. The book provides many examples. I recommend working through them, and comparing your answers with provided solutions. The book is short enough that you can work through it in a week, but comprehensive that it covers just about all the topics you will see on the Math subject test. It was in fact a good experience for me to review all the things I learned in college, and saw that there are a couple big themes and they all fit nicely together. The book contains a few typos. Also, I didn't see any questions on the actual test from the topics covered in the last chapter (additional topics). But that could just be my particular test.

Personally, I find all the books written by Steven Leduc extremely helpful. This book is not an exception. The topics are smoothly presented, and practice problems are very helpful. The candidate (for Math GRE, that is) will still need to get more practice in his/her weak areas even after reading this book. While this book is a great help, it should not be the only book used for GRE test preparation.

It a good book. It covers almost all topics from GRE Subject Test. But it has a lot of missprints and mistakes. So, you have to be very carefull while reading it. The level of the real GRE Subject Test is very close to the level of the test in this book. And the tests published by ETS are much easier then the actual test. This book alone is not enough if you wanna let more then 60% of people below you.

IF YOU WANT REAL SAMPLES, try Author Bramson, Morris.
Title Mathematics : subject test (advanced) / by Morris Bramson. Publ/date New York : Arco Pub., c1983. THis is the most comprehensive collection of samples of GRE MATH SUBJECT TESTS that I've found to be extremely useful, most approximate to the real tests! You will see! Just wonder why they are not publishing it anymore! BUT IF YOU ARE AIMING FOR THE GRE GENERAL MATH, TRY Mathematics: Graduate Record Examination Series (Gre) (Graduate Record Examination Series, Gre-12) by Jack Rudman ISBN: 0837352126 I STUDIED OTHER BOOKS LIKE THE PRINCETON REVIEW BEFORE THIS ONE, 690 FOR THE FIRST TEST. AFTER DOING THE VERY REAL SAMPLE TESTS, I TOOK THE GRE AGAIN THIS MONTH NOV. AND GOT 790. I WOULD LIKE TO HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR THOSE WHO ARE PREPARING FOR THE GRE MATH TEST!

Now I'm having a good time reviewing the GRE Math sub test under the guidance of this book.
It provides me with explicit syllabus for what I need to know for this test. And what's more? It tells me to which extend I need to prepare for each section. GRE Sub test doesn't like a test we might have in college. It covers a wide variety of knoweldges but with little depth. So we must be very careful with how much effort we put into each section. If you go without this kind of guidance, this would be a big problem. What test takers need to pay attention for is that this book may not be adequate to prepare you for a high score. Other references should also be referred to for a better understanding of the concepts and theories. Plus, for going through the test skillfully, other practice works should also be taken into account. Finally an advise for non-english test takers: this is a vital book for us to get familiar with english vocabularies related to math, so don't miss it.

This is NOT a book about the quantitative section of the general GRE! It is a book for those taking the MATH SUBJECT TEST for the GRE. Leaving a bad score for this book because you are confused about this issue is not fair to the author/publisher of this book.

There is another book on GRE math which definitely worse than this one (I saw it). This book covers all the material you need, how ever there are not enough practice problems. You might want to solve extra problems from your text books.

I think the book is good, hoever, I do not finish reading it, that's why I did not rate it "5".
By the way, I think your worker in China do not take his job seriously. When I was not at home, he simply put the book on the floor leaning the door. It was easily picked by others, and I could have no chance to get it back. |
