My 9 year old Chamberlain garage door opener stopped working (I could hear the motor running, but the chain was not moving) - took off the cover and found the gear teeth worn off. For $6+ (including shipping), I decided this was worth a try. Placed an order and received the gear promptly a few days later. Installed it, made a few adjustments, and my garage door opener is working again. Saved me the cost of a new garage door opener (around $170 or more, just looking around locally).

A few more thoughts:

You will also need lithium grease ("white grease") when you install the new gear. This is NOT included with the gear, but you can pick up a tube at your local hardware store for a few bucks if you don't already have some.

I debated whether to purchase just this gear, or the "replacement kit" which includes the mating worm gear, lube, and few more parts. Inspection of my opener showed that the mating worm gear was in good shape, so I decided to get this gear only. You may not be as lucky, so if you inspect your unit and find the mating gear worn out as well, go for the kit - still much cheaper than a new opener.

Installation: If you are reasonably handy, you will not find this difficult. You can find some good "how to's" on YouTube, so check there to see what is involved. You do NOT need to take the opener down from the garage ceiling to repair it. Here's a brief synopsis:

Before you do anything else, UN-PLUG the electrical connection!

1. Remove the cover (use screwdriver or preferably nut driver)
2. Inspect to see what is worn out, and order required parts
3. Remove plastic clip (by hand) from end of shaft holding worn gear; remove small gear (just pull it off)
4.

No need to replace the whole gear assembly when can replace the gear itself for a cpl bucks. Exact fit on my 20yo Sears Garage door opener. Takes a small punch to remove the lower roll-pin and a vice to press it back in. Easy work and don't forget to lube all the gears with lithium grease.

Everyone please read the info for the gear! MUST apply gear grease to gear so it doesn't strip like my old one. Apply grease to all teeth before installing and apply grease to all gears in garage door motor while your at it. I failed to do so and ruined mine first day :(

I purchased the Drive Gear only. The Gear that I purchased was the same as original. This was an easy fix. The only minor difficulty I had was driving out the roll pin on the shaft. But, not that hard at all. Replace the gear, greased it (lithium grease), put the cover back on and re-installed it. Total time with interruptions - 1.2 hours. We'll see how it holds up, but appears to working as new. Fast Delivery, installed in minutes and works fine. Many thanks.

The gear worked perfect and arrived quickly!! This was a lot cheaper than replacing the entire opener. The price was also unbeatable.

Correct fit. So much cheaper to buy the single gear rather than the entire kit. This is the gear than normally stops out. Usually because the door has become out of adjustment.

This was all I needed to repair the garage door opener. And I thought I was going to have to buy a new opener.
