About the Author

Carol Tubbs, MA, OTR/L, has been a practicing occupational therapist for 20 years. She is currently an associate professor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in the School of Health Related Professions in Jackson. She has also served as an item writer for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy for a number of years. Ms. Tubbs has worked in numerous practice settings and mourns the recent decline of creativity and occupation-based intervention in occupational therapy practice. Margaret Drake, PhD, OTR/L, ATR-BC, LPAT, FAOTA, attended classes in eight different colleges and universities over the years, preparing herself for different phases of her career and stages of life. She taught in three American universities and in two overseas, one in Saudi Arabia and one in Taiwan. Dr. Drake credits the latter two experiences for preparing her for teaching classes in sociocultural issues as well as writing about cultures in the first two editions of Crafts in Therapy and Rehabilitation. Her two most personally meaningful awards are the FAOTA (Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association) and the Volunteer of the Year Award from Stewpot Community Services Center for the weekly art group she co-led for 8 years with her coauthor, Carol Tubbs. Dr. Drake retired from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, and she currently resides in Volcano, Hawaii. She now writes historical novels about intrepid women who could have lived but were not accorded their proper importance at the time; her first three novels all had occupational therapy heroines. She also assists her niece and her husband in operating their bed and breakfast near Kilauea Volcano National Park Headquarters and is also learning to garden in the rain forest. Dr. Drake tries to live a life simple in material things but rich in things of the mind and spirit.

For ten years I have worked in the arts and crafts portion of the Occupational Therapy Role. Daily, I see the restorative effects of the creative process, which give meaning to the lives of the elders, with whom I work. I see individuals who retain functions and tool use ability far longer than their counterparts. To me, the guy who can still use a hammer or a paintbrush is far more likely to continue feeding themselves...

Still over these few years I have watched as the latest breed of Occupational Therapists have smugly dismissed the "restorative" value of our persuits with our patients. Nursing administrators and funding sources such as Medicaid also question the thereputic value of our work. This book outlines proceedures for bringing documentable, theraputic approaches into our work. Thanks.

In our present culture that looks down its nose at handcraft, this book represents an unusual plea to return craft to its valuable place in occupational therapy. Though I am not an occupational therapist, I find great value in making useful items and incorporating creativity to make them beautiful. I believe children, in particular, need to be introduced to these activities and experience them as lifelong hobbies, if not careers. The authors of this book make their case with many recent scientific findings listed at the end of each chapter. The chapters are readable by a lay person and very down to earth. After making the case for using craft in therapy, the remaining chapters present individual crafts with plenty of ideas for simplifying them or making them more complex to meet the needs of individuals. I think this book would be useful to anyone who has a serious love of handwork and wants to share it in a variety of settings.

Useful in terms of reminding us OTs of our historic use of crafts, helpful ideas for documentation, justification and ways to use with different populations. I was hoping for more ideas about safety issues in acute psychitatric settings, since safety concerns are the among the most challenging in terms of what materials can be used with people who are suicidal, self harming and/or aggressive. Maybe I will write the book for that setting.
