Grade 3-5-Teachers and caregivers will welcome these two informative nature craft books, each with 20 simple projects. They both have clear instructions and full-color illustrations, and call for easy-to-find materials. Crafts in Deserts include a green toad paperweight, a tortoise-shaped box, a cactus puppet, and a sand pendant. Polar Animal projects include a penguin pin, a walrus mask, and a harp seal puppet and her fuzzy baby. Each one is presented on a double-page spread. Information about the environment, animal, or plant is provided in the introductions and on the index-card illustration that depicts the real animal or plant and gives some facts about it. Even though at times the finished craft only faintly resembles the real thing, the tone of these books is lighthearted and cheerful. Elementary-grade children should be able to use the books by themselves, but younger children would be able to handle most of the crafts with a little help.
