Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5 Up–This follow-up to The Crafty Diva's D.I.Y. Stylebook (Watson-Guptill, 2004) includes an introduction that poses the question, Are you ready for a makeover? Chapters include Redo Your Room, Wake Up Your Workout, and Get a Passion for Fashion. Complete with media references, each chapter includes three crafts with instructions, a difficulty meter for each one, and a list of needed supplies. A picture of the finished item, more ideas, and illustrations of supplies and the more difficult steps are included. The result is another fun, imaginative book that will surely keep some readers away from the television and in the creative mood on rainy afternoons or after school. The projects don't require spending oodles of time or money. Many supplies can be found around the house or at local craft stores. Especially useful are the tips for crafting parties and ideas for making money with projects. The author's suggestion that crafting can be more than just-for-fun may inspire readers to explore more creative job possibilities in the future.–Delia Fritz, Sunset Ridge Middle School, West Jordan, UT

More About the Author

People most know Kathy Cano-Murillo as The Crafty Chica. She has been profiled for her art and crafts in The New York Times, USA Today and NPR.

Kathy has been a writer longer than she has been a crafter, inspired in grade school by Erma Bombeck and Judy Blume. As an adult, Kathy went on to have a 13-year newspaper career at The Arizona Republic as an entertainment reporter, all while running her award-winning web site, CraftyChica.com. She has authored seven books including Crafty Chica's Art de la Soul and Crafty Chica's Guide to Artful Sewing.

In 2004, Kathy pursued her dream of writing a novel and finished her first draft for National Novel Writing Month. She wrote from 10 pm-2 am every night while her family slept, a tradition she still carries on to this day. Her manuscript sold in 2007 in a three-way bidding war to Grand Central Publishing.

Kathy's debut novel, Waking Up in the Land of Glitter released in March 2010 and her second, Miss Scarlet's School of Patternless Sewing in March 2011. She is currently writing her third book.

Kathy designs her own Crafty Chica product line through iLoveToCreate, a Duncan Enterprises Company, and she is also the Crafts Editor for BlogHer.com

Kathy's mission with her novels is to share stories about contemporary Latinas living and working in the creative arts. She lives in Phoenix, AZ, with her husband, two kids and five Chihuahuas. Her motto for life is "Crafts, drama and glitter".

This review is from: The Crafty Diva's Lifestyle Makeover: Awesome Ideas to Spice Up Your Life! (Paperback)
i bought this book and the other crafty diva book for my little sister for her birthday and we LOVE both of them! the projects are so different and easy to make and super colorful. we already have made a list of projects we are going to make next week at my siuster's slumber party. i like how the writing in it is so funny and relatable. i just barely found kathy's crafty chica web site and podcast and am so proud to find she is a latina like me! this book is so creative and happy, i encourage all girls to go buy it so you can make the projects with your friends!!!! i can hardly wait to go buy kathy's other books, i hope they are as good as these ones are!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous book for girls!!!, June 4, 2005
This review is from: The Crafty Diva's Lifestyle Makeover: Awesome Ideas to Spice Up Your Life! (Paperback)
This book is even BETTER than the first Crafty Diva book. It not only has craft projects, but it also has all kinds of neat articles like how to feng shui your room, how to sell your jewelry and how to make a mix tape and other cool stuff like that. This book takes care of all my presents for my nieces birthdays. These Crafty Diva books are awesome!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars tween-focused, but good for adults, too!, November 10, 2005
This review is from: The Crafty Diva's Lifestyle Makeover: Awesome Ideas to Spice Up Your Life! (Paperback)
Ok -- I may be twice as old as the typical reader of this book, but I love the peppermint face mist directions -- I'm planning on making some with my friends' kids for the holidays!

If you've ever wondered how to keep a group of younger girls entertained on a rainy afternoon, the Crafty Diva's Lifestyle Makeover is a great jumping-off point for activity ideas. I teach kids to knit (in person and with my Knitgrrl books): believe me, they'd rather be doing fun things like this than watching endless TV reruns. Creativity is cool!

Like her earlier Crafty Diva book, the illustrations are adorable, the directions are clear, and the tips are great. I like her emphasis on money-saving ideas...you don't have to be a millionaire to be a crafty girl!
