Book Description

August 4, 2006
Here's a great way for Mom or Dad to spend quality time with their pre-schooler. Fun ideas abound in this bright, cheerful, color-illustrated book filled with quick-and-easy art projects for making posters and paper models. Parents can read instructions aloud to kids as they work together. The book's introduction lists all needed equipment--glue, scissors, pencil, ruler, crayon or felt-tip pen, stickers, scraps of cloth, and various colors and types of paper. The book's 28 projects fall into three categories: farm animals; sea creatures; and cars, trains, and planes. Projects are focused to give younger children a real sense of achievement as they have fun creating paper or cloth cows, pigs, fish, whales, trains, trucks, airplanes, and even rocket ships!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K–Twenty-eight age-appropriate collages, designed to be completed by two- to five-year-olds with adult interaction, include a tugboat, an airplane, a cow mask, and an apple tree. An introduction has information on materials, safety, and skills development. The colorful, clear format is consistent throughout the book, with one spread devoted to each activity. All projects use simple geometric shapes that, for the most part, are glued onto a sheet of oaktag or paper. Each craft has a materials list, instructions about and pictures of the pieces that an adult must cut out, and a picture of the finished project. An inset provides additional instruction on how to upgrade the project for use with older children. Because most craft titles are written for older children, this book fills a desperate need in library collections and in nursery schools. It is also suitable for storytime programs that use a craft component, and, of course, for one-on-one sharing.–G. Alyssa Parkinson, Highland Township Library, MI

From Booklist

Designed for parents to use with young children, the 28 projects in this collection are both fun and simple to put together. Hankin addresses grown-ups in the text and turns the scissors work over to them. She leaves painting and spot details to the little ones and also suggests embellishments that slightly older children can add. Most of the projects are constructed from paper plates and colored or painted papers that have been cut into simple, often geometric shapes and then adorned with cotton balls, stickers, or marker designs; small templates accompany the instructions for many of the activities, as does a large picture of the finished project. Hankin warns parents not to expect picture-perfect results from their kids; fun and togetherness are the goals here. Stephanie Zvirin

Just OK March 10, 2011

Format:Paperback
The projects are VERY basic. 25 of the 28 projects require cutting out shapes of paper (which Mom does ahead of time) then gluing them together to make a picture of an animal, rocket, or truck etc. I was expecting a craft book with varying ideas. This is just the same idea repeated. Not what I expected. That being said, I think the book has some value. Great for young toddlers and there are "Ideas for Older Children" for each project. Which would be really great if you have an older child doing the same project. Another bonus is that these projects aren't as messy as art projects tend to be. The book has a pleasant layout and easy to follow instructions.

Great for toddler/preschoolers September 2, 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
My 3 year old loves "arts and crafts" but other craft books I have looked at (like Rosie O'Donnell's book) have projects far too complicated for my young kids. These projects are relatively simple. If you are creative on your own, you would likely find this book too basic. I am not, however, that creative and we love looking through this book for easy and fun projects that can be completed within his attention span. On other plus -- the projects are great for boys since it includes rocketships and monster trucks. Some other books are too "girly" for my boy.

simple and kids love it! August 28, 2009
Format:Paperback
This book has wonderful ideas. Pictures are clear and explanatory, and the crafts are very simple, and nice for non-crafty moms who can choose a quick art project without mess, or do the messy painting when there's time. There is mom-work required with 2-year olds. I do cutting pieces, completing projects at times, but my kids learn from watching it, and when I prep at night, than it's easy to keep their attention on simply gluing their pieces, and than I have them color the finished products. My twins are proud to see their flowers, duck ponds, rockets...up on the wall, and say,"that's what I did", and they ask to do more art projects. Best thing is how cheap crafts can be! paper plates, toilet tubes, construction and scrapbook paper, scissors, glue, aluminim foil...if you're crafty, some crafts in this book aren't so unique and may be too simple/common sense, but these crafts helped me get back to basics, and I liked following step-by-step,b/c otherwise, I'd put off doing crafts or I'd repeat the common crafts from my childhood, which is limiting.
