This review is from: Craig Armstrong: Memory Takes My Hand (Audio CD)
If you're looking for anything even remotely resembling Craig Armstrong's more bombastic works (Plunkett & Macleane, The Incredible Hulk) or contemporary outings (As If To Nothing, Space Between Us), look elsewhere. This entire CD is incredibly low-key and while relaxing, it is also somewhat uninteresting. His "one minute" pieces for orchestra feel disjointed, with cues that fall flat in the short time they are presented to us. Had these pieces not been restricted to 60-70 seconds, they would have likely developed more solidly and been in the end more rewarding. I purchased this album with the expectation of getting music similar to Craig's "Film Works" but instead received something a few rungs below "Piano Works" and far less compelling than either album. Only for Armstrong Aficionados.

I must confess I found strange to find a CA production in the classical music section...But IT IS really classical music! Well, my first studies were in classical music having a oboe diploma, but never got in too deep in classical... And knowing CA for his great electronic side, YES, mixed up with strings and choirs, didn't expect a really symphonic version fo his creative side... So, I did not appreciate it as I did it with his other works, but still is a great listening.... |
