It's an exceptional book that can give rise to a family tradition. The story of "Cranberry Thanksgiving" centers around Grandmother's Famous Cranberry Bread, and the recipe for the bread is on the back cover of the book. My mom and I read the book and made the bread for the first time when I was 4 years old, and 32 years later the tradition is still going strong. I still enjoy going to the bookshelf in the weeks before Thanksgiving to find this book and bake the bread.

The book's story is engaging, the illustrations are lovely, and the characters are memorable - who could forget wild Mr. Whiskers or snooty Mr. Horace? There's even a moral for those who like morals - don't judge a book by its cover.

I remember my father buying this book for me sometime in the early '70's. I loved Mr. Whiskers from the very beginning. It was one of my first lessons that there is more to a person than meets the eye. And I was fascinated by the "secret" recipie- I still make it for holiday parties, and everyone loves it! I'm looking forward to holiday time and sharing it once again with my nephew!

when i was in the third grade, my teacher mrs. higgenbotham read us this book, and then we made the cranberry bread in class- i thought that it was the greatest thing back then, even though everyone hated the cranberries! i am so excited to have found this book again and cannot wait to share it with my stepsister who is in the 3rd grade this year- im sure she'll hate the cranberries as well, but im also sure she'll love the book-

My mom bought this book for me when I was a child in the 70's, now I have my own daughter in 1998 and can't wait to share this with her. I love the pictures and how scary Mr. Whiskers always was to me!

purchased this book in the 1970's, my children enjoyed both the book and the recipe, which I prepared for their classes. Now my grandsons enjoy the book and love to have the cake made for their classes.

Who cares if the silver spoons don't match, or if the red hall carpet is worn and mended!

Maggie and her grandmother live at the edge of a cranberry bog.
Maggie has invited Mr. Whiskers over for Thanksgiving dinner and grandmother is not too pleased at the thought of him in the house! After all, he smells like seaweed! But each year she tells Maggie, "invite someone poor or lonely", so Maggie invites Mr. Whiskers.
Mr. Whiskers actually ends up saving the day!
The pictures in this book are very warm and charming, and the story holds the interest of my squirmy 2 year old, as well as my older children.
We read it often and have even baked the cranberry bread from the recipe included in the book. It's very, very good.
A delightful story for Thanksgiving or any time.

This was one of my favorite books when I was a child. I loved the story tremendously, and the illustrations were mesmorizing. It always would put me in the mood for Thanksgiving, any time of year! I still read it today, and the pictures bring me back to a wonderful time. All of Harry Devlin's books are fantastic...and the Cranberry series is a must for children of all ages.

My favorite book from my childhood is Cranberry Thanksgiving. My brothers favorite is Where the Wild things are. My mother took the time with us to make books come alive. She used to put me up on the counter top and let me "help" her bake. She has a picture of me at age 3 on the counter with a purple and white adult size gingham check apron tied up under my arms.
I have carried on the tradition of making cranberry bread with my family. I am mom to 6 children (expecting my 7th) and still buy cranberries every year to make huge batches of this cranberry bread. (I use straight orange juice concentrate to make the recipe, because I am an orange fan.)
Start a tradition with your family. They'll remember making the cranberry bread as much as reading the book.

This book is very charming indeed! Maggie is a delightful young girl that knows looks aren't everything and befriends a man not based on his looks but based on his need for a friend. And when things start to fall apart at the Thanksgiving dinner she holds everyone together. I read this book to my children and we all loved it and are grateful to know there are others like it.

It is a great book that brings about the true spirit of thanksgiving with a little lesson thrown in, and the basis of the book...the secret Cranberry Bread recipe...is a delightful way to tie-in these fun and whimsical characters. And, to my delight, the recipe is included at the back of the book!

Great for parents to read and great for children to read!

I checked this book out of the library for my son (Kindergarten) and I to read. I'll bet we read it eight or ten times while we had it. We loved it so much we got a copy to keep at home.

It is the kind of a story that both the child and the adult reading it enjoy. I found that *I* looked forward to reading it! The characters, with the possible exception of Mr. Horace, were all people that you learned to like with the first reading. They were quite different from each other, but those differences almost made them more appealing.

The book is also given to a number of educational opportunities. For example, my son and I made the recipe for cranberry bread at the end of the book. (Actually, though, I don't think I would have stolen the recipe. To each his own!) There were several topics related to science that the book touched on that we could pursue -- so many that I'd expect we will read them and do some of those activities that we missed next year!

If you, as a parent, get tired of the run-of-the-mill children's books out there, try this one! You may find that you have to read it over and over again, but that's okay, because *you* will enjoy it, too!
