Book Description

September 2002
In her first book, Deadly Nightshade, Cynthia Riggs introduced us to one of fiction's most delightful - and most realistic - "circumstantial detectives" - an ordinary civilian whom circumstances thrust into the role of sleuth. Victoria Trumbull is as believable a feisty 92-year-old as you can imagine, with all the expected aches and pains and a refusal to let them stop her from enjoying her multifarious activities.

A native of the Massachusetts island called Martha's Vineyard, whose ancestors sailed from its shores generations back, Victoria knows more about the island and its people, then and now, than anyone else living. The knowledge has helped her solve one murder and earn her own baseball cap emblazoned with "West Tisbury Police Deputy," and the job that goes with it.

Of course she knows Phoebe Eldridge; a short-tempered woman who lives alone, dislikes her granddaughter intensely and won't even mention the name of her son, a Vietnam vet who disappeared some years before. It's Phoebe's rancor as much as any desire for money that leads her to sell the family land to a developer who comes up with what seems like an offer she doesn't want to resist.

The Conservation Trust enlists Victoria, as someone who will not be suspected, to search that land for an endangered plant, any endangered plant, because the state prohibits bulldozing rare plant habitats. Victoria is delighted to add another purpose to her daily walks. She enlists an eleven-year-old after-school assistant, and with the "Endangered" list in her hand, she begins her search. Her first find, though, is the body of one Montgomery Mausz, the developer's rather dubious attorney.

There are plenty of suspects, but deputy Victoria (don't dare say "honorary deputy" to Victoria's face) hasn't forgotten her first task and is rewarded by the discovery of a little nest of cranefly orchids, which puzzle Victoria by appearing to change shape. In the course of this botanical detection, Victoria and her assistant are treated to adventures that delight the 92-year-old as much as the pre-teen, even though they give both of them more scares than they had bargained for.

This charming story, with its share of thrills and suspense, will have readers crossing their fingers and hoping the sea air, home-baked beans, and a vital interest in what goes on around her will keep old Victoria Trumbull going for a long, long time.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Victoria Trumbull, a 92-year-old Martha's Vineyard native, deputy police officer and naturalist, continues to delight in this second outing (after 2001's Deadly Nightshade) from Vineyard native Riggs. Lonely recluse Phoebe Eldredge decides to sell 200 acres of beautiful, unspoiled land to a developer rather than leave it to her descendents, in particular her crass, rude granddaughter, whose arrival on the island triggers the well-paced action. Because Massachusetts has a law against destroying endangered plants, Victoria, an avid walker, goes in search of a rare plant, any rare plant, on Phoebe's property in order to forestall development, but first she stumbles on a decayed corpse, which proves to be that of sleazy lawyer Montgomery Mausz. Victoria's new sidekick, an 11-year-old boy named Robin, makes a worthy companion, leading her to unexpected island nooks. A stranger pinned under a storm-toppled tree in Victoria's driveway, an avaricious developer married to a Nevada showgirl, a recovering Vietnam veteran, earnest botanists, naOve town officials, a clique of golfing doctorsall are involved, but not all are what they seem. Amid dealings and double-dealings, the body count rises. The author's prodigious fund of natural lore, both plant and animal, complements her authentic portrait of the Vineyard's human community, complete with a chorus of locals on the porch of a West Tisbury landmark, Alley's general store. Bits of sly humor and wordplay add to the fun. This mystery unfolds as nicely as the Vineyard spring it so lovingly depicts.

From Library Journal

The second appearance of 92-year-old Victoria Trumbull, amateur sleuth, upholds the promise of her first in Deadly Nightshade. Here, she and her young assistant look for a scarce plant that might provide clues to the murder of a local attorney. A great story.

Although this book had less Martha's Vineyard than Cynthia Riggs first novel starring "detective" Victoria Trumbull, I found it more enjoyable. In "Deadly Nightshade", there were too many coincidences that placed Victoria Trumbull in just the right place at the right time to be involved in the solution to the murder mystery. In The Cranefly Orchid Murders, Victoria still happens upon the first dead body, but the rest of plot involves her skills and pluckiness in a more natural way. There is more mystery to this book, and some enjoyable exchanges among the varied groups vying for the 200 acres of prime real estate which lead to the murders. There is also a wonderful description of one characters slip into alcoholism and homelessness, and I like that there are a few minor loose ends which are NOT neatly tied up at the end.
I look forward to the next Cynthia Riggs novel!

5.0 out of 5 stars strong senior citizen amateur sleuth tale, May 12, 2002
Victoria Trumbull is a spry ninety-two year old woman who lives on Martha's Vineyard year round. She has more energy than most people half her age, goes hiking, writes poetry and reads to the residents of the retirement home.

One of Victoria's neighbors, Phoebe Eldridge, has just sold her home and land to another Martha's Vineland resident, Harry Ness. While hiking Victoria discovers the murdered body of the lawyer who represented both parties in the property sale. Many different interest groups offer to buy the land from Ness but he refuses to sell it to anyone because he intends to build an exclusive $180 million dollar luxury community. When Harry is found murdered every person who wanted to buy the land is considered a suspect and Victoria decides it is her job to bring the killer to Justice.

The heroine of THE CRANEFLY ORCHID MURDERS makes this mystery novel very special. It's great reading about an elderly woman who has all her faculties while solving crimes, hiking and being creative. Victoria comes across as very believable and will appeal to readers of all ages. Thanks to Cynthia Riggs colorful descriptions, the real Martha's Vineyard comes alive to readers who will feel as if they vacationed there.

5.0 out of 5 stars 92 Year Old Mystery Maven, May 25, 2009

This interesting series of mysteries features Dorothy, who at 92, is a "feisty woman who refuses to let the aches and pains of old age stop her from enjoying her multifarious activities". Dorothy lives on Martha's Vineyard, where she is well-known thumbing rides from islanders as she walks to her various appointments. She is also a volunteer with the sheriff's department, and when acting in that capacity, she wears her special cap. Because of Dorothy's age, her experience in life enables her to look inside the human heart, often picking up clues missed by others.

This is the second book in the series of seven books featuring this character. Each of the books is named after a plant, usually a native wildflower. I found the book enjoyable and the story riveting. Cynthia Riggs, the author, is a thirteenth generation islander, who with her daughter, runs a bed and breakfast, The Cleaveland House, a 1700's home. She said Dorothy is patterned after her own mother.
