Book Description

Designed to release pain and trauma as well as support the body’s healing through a gentle, hands-on approach, Craniosacral Therapy (CST) has become an increasingly popular modality. In Cranio-Sacral-SELF-Waves, CST expert Olaf Korpiun expands on William Sutherland’s famous theory of the “breath of life,” an unexplained power that generates corrections from within our bodies without the influence of external forces applied by the therapist. This new theory, drawing also on physics, anatomy, physiology, embryology, and osteopathy, finds scientific evidence that the original source of craniosacral movement is a resonant movement from an energy field in the universe: it is the oscillating waves of rhythm in the universe, he argues, that control all biological rhythms within all living beings. Dr. Korpiun presents his method of working with patterns of motion in the body, including extremely slow frequencies of movement which he calls “Cranio-Sacral-SELF-Waves (“SELF” standing for “Super-Extreme-Low-Frequency”). By following his approach, says the author, bodyworkers and other health practitioners can work in a more focused and productive way, utilizing practical techniques for treating the widespread rhythmic imbalances that lead to physical
and psychological problems.

Olaf Korpiun's new book, out for the first time in English, brings to light a new understanding of the internal rhythms felt by craniosacral therapists and osteopaths. "Craniosacral therapy" had its beginnings in the work of John Upledger, DO, in the 1970's, but the work began a century before in America with the work of Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, and later by his student, William Sutherland, DO. Sutherland described what he was feeling as "the breath of life," and went on to describe three different rhythms he could feel, the cranial rhythm, the mid-tide and the long-tide. For over a century, osteopaths,(and other therapists in the last forty years) have worked with these rhythms, seeking to relieve restriction within the fascial system of the body. Various explanations for the rhythm have been proposed, but, because of the subtle nature of the rhythms, and the subjective nature of each response, no unifying reason has emerged. Perhaps until now. Korpiun's work explores the rhythms across a spectrum of frequencies using mathmatics and physics, focusing on the nature of oscillation present in all living tissues, waves that are present from within the cell to within the cosmos. Building upon the foundation he establishes, he goes on to make an excellent presentation of methods the craniosacral therapist can use to access to assess and address restriction. This book is especially well suited for the trained therapist who is looking to go more deeply into this work. For someone not familiar with the concepts of fractals and wave theory, Korpiun does a good job of explaining, and relating these subtle rhythms to the mathmatics and physics that underly them. As a practicing craniosacral therapist, I was able to read this book and to access the work, as he teaches, immediately. As a teacher, I find his theory to be plausible, based in solid theory. I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book July 22, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have been an Upledger Institute trained CranioSacral Therapist for 20 years and found this to be a refreshing and interesting book. This therapy technique is a remarkable healing technique and it is helpful to have more written that explains what is happening in our bodies and how this can be helpful in the healing process.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mis-leading April 27, 2013

This book does not meet the needs of an osteopathic physician or massage therapist looking to teach cranio sacral from a scientific perspective. It has been a huge disappointment.
