Book Description

April 29, 2008
With the troubling side effects and surging costs of medications and surgery, Americans are increasingly turning to CranioSacral Therapy as an effective, drug-free, and non-invasive therapy. A gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the function of the craniosacral system — the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord — CST boosts the body’s natural healing processes and has proven efficacious for a wide range of medical problems from migraines, learning disabilities, and post-traumatic stress disorder to fibromyalgia, chronic neck and back pain, and TMJ. This book provides a broad introduction to this therapy by way of short pieces written by a number of well-known practitioners or experts. In addition to pioneer John E. Upledger, contributors include Richard Grossinger (Planet Medicine), Don Ash (Lessons from the Sessions), Don Cohen (An Introduction to Craniosacral Therapy), and Bill Gottlieb (Alternative Cures). Each selection covers a different aspect of CST: what it is, what it does, how it heals, what the practitioner does during a CST session, CST’s relationship to cranial osteopathy and other healing therapies, as well as other topics of interest to the beginner.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Why should it surprise us that we can tap into the body’s own inner wisdom to facilitate a positive response through the use of our hands and an innate desire to help? In my mind, this is health as it was meant to be—a natural collaboration between two human beings on a multitude of different levels, all simply allowing the body to do what it was born to do best.”
—John E. Upledger, from the Introduction

“I have long sought an introduction to craniosacral therapy for those who don’t know what it is or imagine it has to do with spinal injury or is only for sick people. In fact, CST is a natural manual medicine, preventive as well as curative, psychological and emotional as well as anatomical and somatic. Much as Iceland contains powerful underground shear forces and vital fluids, so does the human body. Their balance and release affect every aspect of life. This anthology opens the door to general mainstream understanding.”
—Birgir Hilmarsson, founder and director, The Upledger Institute, Iceland

5.0 out of 5 stars A great overview of CranioSacral Therapy for practitioners and clients!, June 18, 2009
This review is from: CranioSacral Therapy: What It Is, How It Works (Paperback)
I have practiced CranioSacral therapy since 2002, and am always looking for ways to explain it to my clients as well as to my massage therapy students. This book gives a great overview of the anatomy and physiology as well as a description of the techniques used and how/why they work. I will be using this with clients and recommending it to students!

I was expecting a little more than just a bunch of information, but while I was ready I learned that you have to take classes and in some cases become "licensed" for this modality.
