This is a COOL toy. If you have creative kids (you know the type-- they're the kids who love cardboard boxes), this is the toy for them. It's expensive, but it is one of the most versatile toys I've ever seen. It works indoors and outdoors. It is engaging for a variety of ages and genders (my oldest child is 8, my youngest is 1): The older kids love inventing buildings (the ideas included, like the ship and hot air balloon, are wonderful also) and everyone, including the two year old loves playing in it. The boys like making battle forts, the girls make play houses and theaters. And there are enough parts to build two-room forts so you can have a battle at one end and a puppet show at the other. When you're done, it comes apart quickly and neatly into the nylon bag. That's a huge plus if you have space issues.
The only problem with this set is that Cranium discontinued the product and Hasbro bought Cranium so you can not get spare parts for it. What a shame. The instructions include a parts list and I highly recommend a plastic box for the connectors and clips-- one that will fit in the nylon bag (the bag is included)... we just practice our counting when we put the items away to make sure we got all our parts back. Seriously fun. If there are any toy makers out there who read this, please bring this toy series back!!!

I bought this for my 2 year old's birthday. We have four kids, and they all enjoy building forts--meaning dragging all the kitchen chairs into the living room and draping blankets overtop--so I thought it would be a good idea for all. This toy has met my expectations. The connectors are easy enough to use that my 2 year old can connect and disconnect them easily. My 10 year old and 8 year old enjoy making forts on their own, and my 3 year old and 2 year old like to "direct" me to make their ideas a reality. They then take all their dolls and stuffed animals inside, and hang out until they're ready to tear it all down again. The toy seems durable, and a nice feature is that it can be taken apart and stored in a cloth bag quickly. We're very happy with it, and I would recommend this toy to anyone who's tired of hearing, "No!! Don't ruin our fort!!" when the chairs are needed for dinner. :)

We recently played with this at a friend's house and then had to go home and buy one. It was fun for both young (2.5yrs) and old (8 yrs) and even the adults got into it.

My kids ages 2, 8, and 11 ALL love this toy. No, the forts don't stand up forever, but the kids really have to think through the engineering of each creation. They've made submarines, boats, helicopters, hot air balloons, and other random creations - all without the benefit of an instruction book. We happened to find this at Goodwill with all the pieces (except instructions) for the insane price of $3.00! I didn't know what a find I had until I priced it online.
Look for this at resale shops and consignment sales. It's a ton of fun, but I can't imagine anyone paying over $100 for it.

My kids absolutely LOVE this toy. It is the toy that they always come back to when the novelty of their newer toys wears off. At first, my daughter only wanted to build what the instructions showed. But, with a little coaching, she now builds all kinds of things from her own imagination. She has built many different types of "houses" with any number of bedrooms for her "babies", a movie theater, a beauty salon, many stores, obstacle courses, etc. I can see her learning how to put these structures together so that they will withstand her little sister. Her structures are starting to get taller as she gets better at knowing how to do this. In lieu of going outside with a hammer, wood, and nails I think this product is wonderful. My daughter is thinking, learning, imagining, and having fun. She can see her accomplishment standing in front of her. This year, I had to get my younger daughter a set also, because she is old enough to build her own - and it will do one of two things: stop the fighting or...make them work together to build something even bigger!
Truly, if my kids could have ONLY ONE TOY, this would be the one. I have heard some other parents complain that it is cheaply made and falls over. One Mom told me that she built a wall and put a blanket on it and it fell over. As an engineer, I realize that materials and structure go together. I am glad it is so light, because it is easy for my kids to use and nothing gets damaged when they use the sticks as weapons. (Let's face it! It happens!) When my daughter complains that the building is falling over, I just tell her she needs to redesign it. And she does, and she learns. She not only learns about building things, she learns that its OK to go back and redo it, make it better, and that if she puts her mind to it, she can build ANYTHING! At least until we run out of parts!!! |
