Product Description

If you love the design of the Crank Brothers Egg Beater, but you'd prefer a little more pedal under your foot for stability, the Candy SL has your name all over it. Crank Brothers designed the stainless-steel Candy SL after their congregation asked for a little more beef to deal with hairy clip-in situations and long marathon rides. The Candy SL design lets you pedal briefly without engaging the cleat and provides a broader, more comfortable base underfoot, at the expense of a few grams over the Egg Beater SL.

Installed in a snap. Innovative cleats are designed with flexibility of clipping out at two different degree angle options, just by switching which side you install them on. So as you get better and more comfortable with them, you can switch them over to clip out at the steeper degree angle. The simplicity of this system, combined with the innovative design, the comfort of the small platforms and absence of fidgety adjustments make these a great option for beginners, but they will handle the abuse and pounding of an advanced rider too. I had the whole system, pedals and cleats, installed and was riding on them in 15 to 20 minutes. Mountain bike.

This is an excellent pedal! This is the first clipless pedal I have used so I cannot really compare it to other brands; however, Crank Brothers makes a really good product. I have not had any problems at all with it. They keep my feet in tightly with hardly any slake between the cleat and pedal, also not even mud seems to mess with its ability to clip the cleat in. I ride with other people that do not use the Crank Brothers pedals and they always have issues with their pedals not holding tight enough or not being able to clip in when we are in the mud. It is a great product and you should definitely go with Crank Brothers if you love your bike.

I recently signed up with Team In Training to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and compete in a 60 mile off-road mountain bike endurance event. I found The Shimano clips/pedals on my bike when previously used for commuting were fine. I could plan ahead and get unclipped in plenty of time. However for riding on the trail, I found them to be a safety hazard and difficult to use for someone like me who is inexperienced on the trails. After my first training ride, my coach recommended I find a pair of egg beater clips. Now that I've installed and used the Crank Brothers Candy SL bicycle pedals, I understand why.

Install was simple. I removed the old pedals and replaced with the Candy SL pedals using an Allen wrench. I then did the same with the clips on my cycling shoes. While clipping in and out was greatly improved, I was still experiencing some problems unclipping. I removed the clips from my cycling shoes to reinstall with the supplied spacers. A spacer isn't always required, but my cycling shoes have a deep tread with made them necessary.

Now that the Crank Brothers Candy SL pedals have been installed and adjusted, I can easily and quickly clip in and out. The egg beater style pedal doesn't get bogged down with dirt and debris. Plus the pedals have held up to the abuse from occasional falls or running into obstacles. If you are looking for a good pair of inexpensive egg beater style pedals, the Crank Brothers Candy SL bicycle pedals are worthy of your consideration.

PROS:
Inexpensive but durable egg beater style pedal
Doesn't get bogged down with dirt
Simple to install and adjust

CONS:
Grease for pedal install should be included

Good choice pedal for dirty, muddy riding. Gives a bigger platform for your foot to rest on. Very easy to clip into and out of. Used mainly on a Cyclocross bike

I bought these for my new mountain bike. Since the CB cleat is different than the SPDs I had on my old bike, I actually bought a second pair of pedals for the old bike.

The CB design makes a firmer connection between the rider and the bike than my SPDs did. For me this resulted in a heightened sense of control over my bike. Unfortunately it has also resulted in a number of tip-overs as I have had to re-train myself to get out in a pinch when riding off-road. There is no adjustment on these pedals like my SPDs, although some tweaking can be done with the cleats. The cleats can be installed for either 15 or 20 degree release angle, and there is a little room for adjustment with the slightly slotted screw holes in the cleats.

I've also found (at least on my bikes with my shoes) that I cannot clip out of these pedals if the crank arm is within 45 degrees of horizontal towards the rear of the bike (between 8:30 and 10:30 looking at the chain ring side, 1:30 and 4:30 on the non-chain ring side). This is because the front of my shoe hits the crank arm before I can rotate my heel to 15 degrees. I've been riding with them for a month now and I have gotten much better at clipping-out under pressure, pedaling backwards if necessary to get out of the no-unclip zone.

I did have a negative experience with my purchase. One of the pedals in my second pair had a ridiculously stiff spring which made it difficult to clip in and out of in normal situations, and nearly impossible in urgent situations. Due to the seller's/Amazon's policies, I had to send it into CB for a warranty repair instead of doing a simple product exchange like my LBS would do on a defective new purchase.

I am new to cycle sports, but after about 300 miles on a new road bike I decided it was time to graduate to some real pedals. After shopping\asking around I kept being pointed back to the Crank Brothers products and MTB style pedals. I have big feet and none of the road bike style pedal shoes were very comfotable, so I decided to give the SL's a try and I'm glad I did.

Pros:

Simple in design, no small adjustment screws neccessary. - There is really nothing on these pedals that is going to mess up a good ride. Nothing to adjust, nothing to fall out or become loose. Initialy I was worried I would not be able to customize the entry and exit from these pedals, after trying them I realized it was a non-issue, they just work.

Seemingly very well made. - I have only gone 100 miles on these so far so can I cant say they are bullet proof yet, but they seem very tough, very well made.

Lightweight and Stong - They are beefy, and thus very strong with no flex. The surprise comes when you pick them up, much lighter then you expect.

Easy in easy out - Like I stated earlier, I'm new to serious biking and this is my first set of clip in pedals but I have had NO problems getting in and out of these pedals whatsoever. Just start pedaling and they will lock in, a simple twist of your foot (heel out)and they release.

Cons:

So far I have no found any. I will update this review if that changes.
