5.0 out of 5 stars Strangest, best soundtrack I've heard in years., April 18, 2009
This review is from: Crank: High Voltage (Audio CD)
Like the reviewer before me, I'm a huge Mike Patton fan. Once you get into his work, be it music or his voice acting, you just get too impatient to deal with a lesser standard of entertainment like the majority of what's out there on the radio or on TV and, in this case, theaters. If you're wondering how this particular album sounds, however, first try to imagine what the perfect soundtrack to Crank would've been like. And since this movie is more violent and frenetic, the music should be as well, right? Well, it is and it isn't. Patton's scored one of the best atmospheric releases I've heard in so long - creepy when it needs to be, exciting and chaotic when our buddy Chev is going to town on dudes who don't know, and downright funky in-between everything else. You can hear the authentic traditional strings in his Asian inspired tracks like "Massage Parlor" which is just stunning and then you can hear his Korn meets Silent Hill crunchy beats-laden rock number for "The Hammer Drops." The theme for "El Huron" feels like Ennio Morricone doing music for a B-movie about space shamans. If you download one song from this soundtrack, make it "Noticias." Why? Funniest, most out-of-place 11 seconds you'll hear on any CD. Let's face it, if you don't like Mike Patton's knack for mixing 4 genres in 2 minutes, this soundtrack will hurt your brain - but if you're the kind of guy who's willing to see Crank 2, this'll most likely be up your alley.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Genius Strikes Again!, April 9, 2009

This review is from: Crank: High Voltage (MP3 Download)
I know it is absolutely pathetic that a man who has lived nearly 40 years in the greatest country on the planet should get so depressed during the gaps between Mike Patton albums, but I don't even notice it when I'm in the throes of the funk. I don't writhe around naked in a corner coated in crisco oil screaming WHY between painful crying jags, and I never will reach that point. When I finally have one of his compositions ringing in my ear, however, I realize how much precious time I've wasted screaming at pinecones just to get a reaction, just to feel something. I guess what I'm saying is that you probably shouldn't come to this feller for objectivity on anything that has Mike Patton's name on it. Cheese and crackers this thing is good though. The opening track Kickin' is a punk song with just a hint of Patton's vocals playing in the distance. Chickenscratch is the next out of this world composition. Doc Miles, Social Club, Chocolate Theme, Shock and Shootout, Sping Loaded, Catalina Island, Supercharged, and what may be the best track on the album Hammer Drops. If you're not into the entire album, and most of the 32 tracks are atmospheric, then just download these. You can hear the Ennio Morrcone influence, but Great Gretzky's ghost it's original. It has a vibe that most artists would give their left one to hammer out, but Mike Patton appears to do it effortlessly. It tops his "Perfect Place" sountrack by a mile, and I really liked that, but then again I'm far from objective.

4.0 out of 5 stars PATTON DELIVERS KICKIN' SOUNDTRACK!!, March 6, 2011
This review is from: Crank: High Voltage (Audio CD)
Despite being a massive Jason Statham fan i must admit Crank: High voltage the 2009 follow up to 2006's Crank was a bit of a let down, saved only by cameo appearances and a fantastic soundtrack from Mike Patton(faith no more, fantomas, tomahawk and mr bungle) who is no stranger to doing soundtracks/scoring for movies such a A Perfect Place.

If you could compare this to any of Patton's work with other bands it would definitely be Fantomas as most tracks are short and feature bits of death metal and strange noises, not unlike Fantomas debut self titled album or Suspended Animation, if you are familiar with those albums you can guess how this album works, indeed if you have seen the movie you will know how well it worked in what was a fast paced adrenaline rush of a movie.

It's hard to pick out stand out tracks as when you separate them, they are not the same but all together they blend perfectly, track 2 "Chelios" is a gem of a track and starts of like it could be from a gangster/mob movie, "Tourettes Breakdown" is a relentless piece of music and works very well with the same piece in the movie.

If you like Mike Pattons work with Fantomas or Mr Bungle then you will definitely love this as it will be familiar to you, if however think this album is going to be song driven and more like Faith No More and tomahawk then it might not be for you, but Patton enthusiasts(lover of all his work) will love this!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Patton can do it all, June 29, 2009

Good soundtrack, haven't seen film yet-probably even better with the video to go along with it. Mike Patton is amazing-I listen to all his work and he is always coming up with something original that sounds great. How can one man be that creative and talented and still not sound commercial-awsome! Buy it even if you are not familiar with all his bands because it might make you a fan. Then once you're hooked there is so much great music to enjoy from all his projects

So I am biased. But if you are even a casual Patton fan, this is a must own. High energy and very eclectic. Other reviewers have said it better than I could. So I'll just say that this is one of the best soundtracks I've heard.

If you don't like Patton, well then... Eh, sample it anyway. Maybe you'll be converted. Anything can happen.
