To be fair, the book is more about exposing wrongdoers than how to fix the problems, but then again, the solutions at the end of the book are quite brilliant. If you stop giving companies special treatment, they won't need to hire lobbyists. Of course, I do think Jason should have explored more why companies hire lobbyists in the first place, and it's not just to get special benefits, it's to survive. Ask the makers of powder alcohol and the pressure they're facing from legislators who want to ban their products, ask developers of electronic cigarettes, there's always some congressman that's not afraid to ban products.
I do agree that the crony capitalists or "crapitalists" are a scourge that needs to be dealt with. But as a right-libertarian, I do believe that the fault always starts with government. Carlos Slim for example may be a crook, but it's the government that enables his cookery by taxing us so poor people can get emergency phones that Slim sells. Sadly, until Americans are ready to renounce socialism, reject collectivism, embrace individualism, hate class warfare, and embrace a true free market, the crapitalists will remain in power.
Crapitalism is no different. Mattera takes on those in government, big business, and even professional sports who live large on our dime. I really enjoyed how he formatted the book; it's delivered in 27 chapters with each 'crapitalist' getting his or her own dossier, if you will. I read the book in one sitting because it's that good, but if you didn't have the time, each chapter is a stand-alone product. So you can pick up and put down Crapitalism at your own pace.
Mattera also does a great job mixing his targets up with household names, but with also people who aren't as well known, but after Crapitalism, will be. And even with the household names, I found myself learning something new. Maxine Waters' elaborate scheme to cash in on her endorsements -- and hooking up her kids (and grandkid!) in the process. Same thing with Jay-Z, Elon Musk, Rep. Greg Meeks, and George Soros. I learned something new about each person.
It's not just that these crapitalists are picking our pockets. They're such PHONIES as well. Crapitalism is brilliant because Mattera also weaves in a 'do as I say, not as I do' theme to drive home the point that those who preach the loudest about looking out for the middle class are actually the most egregious in fleecing those very same people.
I could go on and on, but the bottom line is this: You need to read this book. Then you need to buy a copy for every person you know. Capitalism has a bad rap today not because of free markets, but because of the perversion of those free markets.
Mattera sets the record straight.
