The book not only has a variety of crappie-fishing tips from Sutton, but also techniques from other well-known crappie anglers including some of the nation's champion crappie anglers such as Missouri's Wally "Mr. Crappie" Marshall and Tennessee's Steve McCadams. -- Taylor Wilson, Mid-South Hunting & Fishing News, March 2007
Sutton is an acknowledged expert on crappie clobbering, and his book is a straight forward revelation of hundreds of practical tips on selecting tackle, bait, tactics, problems and solutions and more than a dozen recipes.
The publisher proudly claims, "No more comprehensive guide on crappie fishing has ever (been) published." Big claim. I have no reason to question it, and I read a lot. -- Terry Sheely, The Reel News, August 2007
There is a consistency with books by Arkansas outdoor writer Keith Sutton. His books will be full of information, and they will be easy reading. That's the case with his newest, "The Crappie Book: Basics and Beyond." Yes, Sutton goes by the nickname Catfish, but he's well versed in crappie and most of the other fish species we enjoy in Arkansas. Sutton is a native Arkansan (Cherry Valley in Cross County) and was editor of Arkansas Wildlife, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission magazine, for 19 years. In the book, he says he began fishing for crappie in east Arkansas at age 6. His book is a how-to volume. It is filled with instructions, suggestions, techniques, alternatives and anecdotes. A significant asset is his use of tips from other crappie experts, and if you can put a few of these into use for your own crappie outings, you'll have the book paid for right there. Although the book's title includes the term "basics," it will be of most value to fishermen who have some experience, some familiarity with the water and with varying conditions. It's expected that they will already know which end of the pole to tie the line to, but Sutton does give some information of effective knots for fishing line and the most efficient ways to hook a minnow. -- Joe Mosby, Arkansas News, February 3, 2007
Well-known fishing writer Keith Sutton has produced a thorough yet compact guide to crappie fishing. Short, efficient chapters deal with crappie biology, seasonal cycles, tackle, location and how to target bigger fish. Lots of sharp black and white photos and occasional diagrams illustrate the text. If you're one of those lucky anglers still able to enjoy the fishing you did as a youth, or if you're an experienced crappie angler looking to brush up on your skills and perhaps learn a few new tricks, The Crappie Book is highly recommended. -- Author: Craig Buddo, May 2007

This book is a must read for all crappie fishermen. The book is very informative and very easy to understand. I learned a lot of things I didn't know about crappie fishing while reading this book. I like the way Keith explains the different behavior of crappie during spring (spawn), summer, fall and winter (pre-spawn). I wish the author would right another book soon.
