Not the Classic Crash,

This review is from: Crash: Mind Over Mutant (Video Game)
I'm glad we rented this one... My little brother (7) wanted to play a Crash game, but this one was somewhat disappointing.
Firstly, while Crash and his abilities have not changed, the premise of this game is that Crash conquers different mutants and "rides" them through the jungle using them to fight. While Crash can get off at any time, many of the extras and some necessary times (knocking over large trees, moving rocks, boss battles etc) require a mutant. The mutants are large, clumsy, and don't jump very high. Needless to say, my little bro found it difficult to know when the mutant could make a jump, or he would need to switch to Crash to make the jump. It was difficult having the mutants being required during the boss battles because they were so slow and clumsy. The touch screen is employed during the "Adventure" mode in the game in the Super-Mario Brothers fashion. If Crash gets his "mojo" full you push a button on the touch screen to activate. You pull your mutants out of your pocket on your touch screen. Also the little mask-guy is on the touch screen, if you touch him he will give you advice. The mini-games seem like an afterthought. There are three mini-games (for single player mode, and apparently you can play one-on-one if you have another DS. This games seems very much designed like Super Mario Brothers. The mini games in SMB use of the touch screen were flawless. Not so for Crash. Many of the movements are awkward and often they don't respond well. The three mini games include: 1) One were you are running (what looks like a cluttered marathon track)and the ship is throwing bombs at you. You tap crash to kick balls back to the ship, move side to side to move him, and push your stylus up to make him jump. (This jump movement often d/n work). 2) One were crash is on a rhino-ball (?) and he is rolling under peach trees. You hold down the stylus to make the peaches fall, roll the stylus over the rhino-ball to catch peaches, and (if you are hit) roll your stylus over Crash to get him out of the dirt. 3) One where there are about 10 platforms and the bad guys are throwing bombs at Crash. Crash has to pick up the bombs and throw them back before they blew up. This one was the only mini-game that felt somewhat comfortable with the touch screen. Overall, I'm glad we just rented it as I spent most of my time helping my brother and trying to figure out what to do. This might have been more fun if the "ride the mutants" was not such a large part of the game. Some of the directions are unclear (even for me) and in the end it tended to be more frustrating than enjoyable.

Not bad, but far from the original Crash.,

This game is quite different from the Crash we're used to. Instead of Wumpa fruit in plenty supply, they've now become scattered and sometimes even scarce. That's not good if one is running low on health. The boxes are all filled with crystals that fill up your "mojo" meter. Gameplay with Crash alone is pretty much the same as the other series, but controlling the mutants is another factor. They don't jump very high, but are very powerful. It's was an interesting concept to have Crash control his enemies and also very nice. The only drawback is their lack of jumping ability. The graphics aren't too shabby, but it took some getting used to since Crash is so small during gameplay. I also miss the invinciblity feature when finding Aku Aku. He gives helpful hints, but in this game, no more plowing through enemies with his awesome power. All in all, it's not an overly horrible game. You can still have fun with this. The mini games aren't too difficult, but some games are easier to control then others. The Crash Kaboom game cooperates the best with the touch screen and the Give Them the Boot game is second best. (You can't jump too well in that one.) The Rolling for Wumpa fruit game is the hardest (for me at least). But try them out to see which one suits you best.
