Gr 5-8--A look at the heart-stopping aspect of auto racing--the awful moment when one car taps another, setting off a series of horrendous caroms, and the equally wrenching sight of an out-of-control vehicle smashing into the wall or some other immovable object. After a general history of accidents during the early days of racing, Benson focuses on multi-car pileups and on individuals who have survived serious crashes--Richard Petty and Ernie Irvan, among others. The author also describes changes in racing rules and safety equipment brought about to lower the odds of such occurrences in the future. Black-and-white photos (some fuzzy) and a list of further readings (mostly Sports Illustrated articles) complete the package. Unfortunately, there is more of an adrenaline rush from watching a crash than reading about it (though the author does a competent job of compressing words and action), and a lot of race fans may opt for a rerun of They Walked Away instead.
