Gr 4-7-With their gruesome, but often-requested subjects, these titles should find a ready audience. Air includes the Hindenburg, the 1960 Christmas crash, United Airlines Flight 232, and TWA Flight 800. Maritime covers the Titanic, the Lusitania, the Morro Castle, and the Andrea Doria. The last volume covers Apollo 1, Soviet spaceships Soyuz 1 and 2, Apollo 13, and the Challenger flight. In all three books, wide margins and large font provide comfortable reading. Sidebars contain additional information. Vintage and color photos with informative captions appear on almost every page. Unfamiliar terms are printed in bold face and defined in a glossary. The texts often include personal anecdotes about people involved in the tragedies and information concerning the results of the post-investigations. As an adult reading this book I was disturbed by the subject matter-- but I think maybe children would be less upset by the stories of air plane crashes and disasters than I was. The book is somewhat sensationalized. It tells stories about individual victims and survivors of air crashes and then also includes some scientific explanations about why the crashes occured. Stories about the Hindenburg, the Christmas Crash of 1960, United Airlines Flight 232, and TWA Flight 800 are included.
