Book Description

December 8, 2010
CRASHING AUGUSTA is a wild journey beyond the ropes of professional sports. Walk the undulating hills of Augusta National, home of the Masters and learn why it may be the planet's greatest golf tournament. Hurl yourself into a Super Bowl week with ticket hustlers who risk life and limb to make or lose a fortune gambling on the big ticket. Explore our national obsession with steroids, and run with the World's Fastest Man. Rites of manhood are anything but a game, as you'll discover in a deadly tale of an initiation gone mad. Five original Playboy stories of man at his strongest, swiftest and most dangerous. The perfect antidote for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Jonathan Littman is the bestselling author of 8 books (The Fugitive Game and The Art of Innovation) and a Contributing Editor at Playboy. "Crashing Augusta is a showcase for Jonathan Littman's talents. If you want to know the truth about everything from steroids in sports to hazing rites that turn deadly and the famed Masters golf tournament, Littman offers it in the most entertaining and emotionally compelling form you can find." -Robert Sutton, Stanford Professor and bestselling author of Good Boss, Bad Boss. "Jonathan Littman combines blunt-nosed reporting with an empathy for his subjects to create uncommonly intimate portraits of some of sport's most intriguing worlds, from a backstage visit to golf's Masters to the hustlers who rule the Super Bowl." -Michael Walker, author of the national bestseller Laurel Canyon: The Inside Story of Rock and Roll's Legendary Neighborhood.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Jonathan Littman is the co-author of The Art of Innovation and The Ten Faces of Innovation, two bestsellers about the legendary design strategy firm IDEO that have each been published in more than 16 foreign editions. Jonathan's exclusive first-hand story about the hacker Kevin Mitnick exposed the media hype, and earned Jonathan profiles in Newsweek and the New Yorker. Similarly, his inside reporting on the BALCO investigation and Barry Bonds in Playboy and for Yahoo! Sports debunked the national press, revealed the flaws in the government's anti-steroids campaign and led to appearances on ESPN, Fox and national radio. Jonathan's true crime books, The Fugitive Game and The Watchman, have been translated into more than fourteen languages. He is the author of eight books, three of which have been optioned for films. A longtime Contributing Editor at Playboy, Jonathan has been nominated for a Pulitzer, won two Computer Press Awards, and a NY Press Club Journalism Award in 2009 and Peter Lisagor Award for Exemplary Journalism in 2010. Jonathan first blogged professionally in 1997, and has recently blogged about business and innovation for The Huffington Post and American Express Open Forum. Jonathan has given numerous keynotes and executive briefings in the United States and Canada on innovation, social media and storytelling. He has also made more than a hundred appearances on television and radio on such national shows as All Things Considered, Fresh Air, Talk of the Nation, CNN, Fox, ESPN and CNBC.

sports writing at its best December 15, 2010
Format:Paperback
If you wondered whether smart, literate sports writing still exists, look no further than this powerful book from Jonathan Littman. And while his prose alone is worth the price of admission, the true strength in the book is found in Littman's reporting. He takes the reader inside of the greatest institutions and events in sports, from the Super Bowl to the Masters, revealing often dark corners that will never be explored by the ESPN hype machine or the beat reporters who are beholden to the teams and the leagues. He also explores the worlds of steroids and the amazing subculture of the world's fastest runners. This is, quite simply, a remarkable book that should be required reading in graduate journalism classes.

Classic Littman January 12, 2011
Format:Paperback
Crashing Augusta hits home with this Augustan. Jon Littman's title article captures the spirit of a great sporting event and the city that hosts it. The book itself is a treasure chest of Jon's wonderful articles that personalize sports and the people who play them. His gift for story-telling makes this collection a marvelous reading experience, even for those who don't follow sports.

I can't add much to the other reviews, except to highlight "The Basement," the story of a tragic fraternity hazing that's told with the power of a fiction narrative. By reconstructing scenes and events after the fact, Jon Littman pulls off a difficult feat, which gives the story a heartbreaking immediacy.
