She Shoots.....She Scores!,
By Chad Spivak (North Miami Beach, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Crashing the Net: The U.S. Women's Olympic Ice Hockey Team and the Road to Gold (Hardcover)
Mary Turco captures the excitement that surrounded the first U.S. Women's Olympic Ice Hockey Team. Unfortunately, the text wasn't quite as excited. Although the stories were interesting, they were dryly written. It was hard to get behind these remarkable athletes as there just didn't seem to be enough character developement. These wonderful gold-medal winners all had to fight the prejudices against women's sports to follow their dreams and serve as inspiration, but this aspect was barely touched upon. The spirit of the 1998 U.S. Women's Hockey Team and their amazing journey was nicely remembered and portrayed, but you will not find much of anything else.

This book is wonderful! It gives all young athletes, like mysefl, hope for the future. Plus, this is a team that deserved to have their story told, and Mary Turco did a wonderful job at telling it.

Crashing the net is my all-time favorite book. This is a well written book that makes you feel that your really there standing beside K.L. or Cammi. It shows you the glory of being an Olympian and one day I want to try to play womens hockey in the Olympics. This book is one of the things that persuaded me! This book shows that anything is possible when you believe in yourself.

This review is from: Crashing the Net: The U.S. Women's Olympic Ice Hockey Team and the Road to Gold (Hardcover)
This book is a "must read" for those who follow ice hockey, for those who keep up on Olympic history and for anyone who has a daughter or granddaughter who yearns to excel in any activity. Author Mary Turco describes how the girls came together as a team and how they overcame trials and tribulations on their quest of Olympic gold. The book runs through a gamut of emotions and extends from stories of youngsters who were told "girls don't play ice hockey" to worldwide recognition as "the best."

This book is fantastic. It is a must read book for young girls who are pursuing a dream athletically that was only available to men previously. It is a feel good book that shows the positive results of hard work and dedication. Mary Turco has done a beautiful job of making you feel that you were there, behind the scenes of the lives of these young women while they pursued the gold. Thank you Mary.

After waiting many months for this book to be released, it can now be said that it was well worth the wait. An absolute must read for anyone interested in this sport or who have followed this team and players over the years. The book shows what it took for these women to get to the absolute highest point in their hockey playing lives. The hard work, the times away from family and friends, and all the tears shed along the way. It is a truly endearing story. Mary Turco has sure come up with a real winner here. I'd personally like to say "thank you" for doing a wonderful job on this book. This team really deserved to have their story told! Mary, you deserve a gold medal for this piece of work! Outstanding!

Some objectivity needed,

This review is from: Crashing the Net: The U.S. Women's Olympic Ice Hockey Team and the Road to Gold (Hardcover)
There's a good book to be written about the 1998 U.S. women's hockey team -- too bad Turco wasn't the one to write it. This is the most "fawning" text I think I've ever read. Everyone is strong, heroic, intelligent, beautiful, etc. A realistic telling of the story would have been quite enough; the embellishments only call into question the author's credibility. This would be good for teens who need a bit of an ego boost; otherwise, this was disappointing.
