Low wattage through minimal EQ and a small speaker can equal awesome tone when dimed. That’s why the small tube amp is a long time secret weapon of toneful guitarists and wily producers to getting big, cranked-to-the-max tube tones down on tape.

Our new V5 Class A combo features a single EL84 output tube producing 5 watts through a single 10" speaker. You won’t find a tube circuit much simpler than that, and it gives you the sweet, pure cleans and warm, crunchy overdrive that can only come from tubes. Simple volume and tone controls give you the widest range of sounds you can find on a practice/recording amplifier.

I bought this amp on clearance at Guitar Center for $80. (usd). When I got it home and plugged it in, I was less than impressed. The tone was flat and when cranked the distortion was harsh and non musical. The next day, I replaced the (worthless) Sovtek 12ax7 preamp tube and el84 power tube with an Electro Harmonix 12ax7 ($12.) and JJ el84 ($21.).....instant difference....the tone was warmer and after a few hours of playing the cheap plastic coated speaker (almost) sounded ok..still not satisfied I looked at replacement speakers...I found an AMAZING sounding speaker from warehouse guitar speakers, a "Veteran 10" 10 inch, seamed paper cone speaker...some think it to be tonally superior to the Vintage 30....HOLY SMOKES!!! It is like a new amp...serious tone! I can not stop playing through it....all said, $80, plus $33 in tubes and $41. for the speaker (yes, only 41.) at roughly $150...this amp went from a dud to an amazing little tone monster....I am completely satisfied! (after a little tweeking)

I replaced the stock speaker with an Eminence Ragin' Cajun. It sounds like Vox doing a Marshall clone-gives you chime to crunch. This amp is NOT a metal amp. I bought mine for $89 (plus $69 for the Ragin' Cajun).

Other points:

solid quality cabinet-no rattles
tone control not as nice as separate bass and treble
would be a total winner with a gain control

The amp I took delivery of isn't the one described, but it is the one in the picture. There are two versions of Crate V5 out there. One has a 8" speaker, Gain, Vol and Tone controls, and seems to be liked by those who reviewed it. The amp I received looked like the one in the photo, but has a Chinese 10" speaker and no Gain control. Both are very significant changes for the worse.

This amp sounds awful at first but improves over a few hours as the 'speaker' breaks in. However, the lack of a Gain control means you have to turn it way up to get the power tube distortion, and it sounds harsh at anything above quiet volumes.

I plugged in a quality speaker cabinet and it sounded better but not good enough to keep.
