Book Description

July 1, 1992 Deathlands (Book 4)
Near what was once the Pacific Northwest, Ryan Cawdor and his roving band of post-holocaust survivors discover a beautiful valley untouched by the nuclear blast that changed the earth forever. Resisting the temptation to settle in the idyllic land, the group is captured and forced deep beneath an extinct volcano to an isolated community of in-bred scientists who are blindly laboring to find better ways of genocide, unaware that the world they are striving to slaughter has already died.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ryan Cawdor and his Band Encounter Two Very Different Types of Crazy!, February 23, 2012

While all utopias may be similar, it would seem that all post-apocalyptic hellholes are disastrous in their own special way. In Crate Lake, Ryan Cawdor's band of travelers encounter two very different but equally nightmarish societies in what used to be northern Oregon. As with the other two books the band just seems to be passing through and exploring what is at each redoubt that they come across. The town of Ginsburg Falls that they encounter is surprisingly clean and orderly on the surface but as one can expect this just hides crazier than average Deathlands dysfunction as the group soon find out along with why there don't seem to be very many women around . . . .
But as it turns out Ginsberg Falls is only the beginning of the mayhem as they go on to visit the Wizard Island Center for Scientific Advancement. Such and peaceful sounding name that is VERY deceiving! This place seems to be beyond the pale for even the main characters who slowly begin to unravel the secrets "research" that the scientists at Wizard Island are doing. And you can bet its not to cure global hunger!
This is a very entertaining book and the best part is that it fills in a lot of the back story for Doc Tanner who is easily one of the most interesting characters in the series so far if I have one complaint it would be that like so many of the Gold Eagle series books the authors seem to rush through the last 20 pages or so as if they are about to his their work limit and need to go ahead and finish. But all in all, a very entertaining addition to the series.
