An Affordable Addition to the Coffee Table,

There are two seasons at Crater Lake National Park, essayist Ron Warfield reminds us, "winter and August." And indeed, Crater Lake's caldera rim so dominates the southern Oregon Cascades that snow can fall at any time and much of the year tunnels are required to access the gift shop, lodge, and visitor center. Warfield's essays, which comprise the text of this short book, capture this reality and the many other moods of Crater Lake in short poignant prose. They are a delight to read and I find, after an extended visit as a child followed by a briefer, but more reflective, visit as an adult, that his writing closely parallels my own views of this beautiful lake and landscape.
But books like this one generally are not purchased for their prose. We buy for the photos and our coffee table. Here again, this book generally does very well. Panoramas are carefully mixed with close examinations of tree trunks, waterfalls with wildlife. Lighting is optimal, and all the seasons are well represented. The only "problem" with the book is that it is not hardcover, and is comparatively easy to scratch and or bend. But the price is right. So if you want to jog your memory after your latest visit to Crater Lake, this book is a good choice.
