for those of you who have no idea, MD.45 was a side project that Dave Mustaine did around 1996 with Lee Ving from FEAR!Fed up with where Megadeth was going musically, Dave got angry and deceided to make a punk record. And why not, Megadeth is rich with Punk music influences!! So he recruited Kelly Lemieux on bass, Veteran MEGA skin basher Jimmy DeGrasso on drums, Dave on guitar and Lee Ving on Vocals and Harmonica. Now that you have a little background, let's get to the reviews:

MD.45 (original) 11 songs of pure punk!! Really! Dave's playing is very Steve Jones ala' Sex Pistols, very differnet from Megadeth. Don't buy this if your looking for the Megadeth sound, you'll hate it! Which I do believe was the Intial gripe alot of fans had about this record. "Dave Doesn't sing!!!" No, he created a BAND, he wanted to be part of a group, not have people buy this record simply because HE did it!! Megadeth is pure MUSTAINE, MD.45 was a group effort in the recording studio, all songs were either written by mustaine alone or with Lee Ving. "The day the music died" is a great punk anthem...and"Designer Behavior" is a punk statement about the state of affairs as it were with the medical profession whaking people with massive amounts of pills and expecting them to function. "The Creed" is a MEGA demo, that mustaine and Ving turned into fantastic song about the American Indians...All in All, if you like Punk, If you like Lee Ving, and if you want to be surprised by Dave's guitar playing BUY THIS!!! Otherwise stay the hell away from this record....

MD.45 (remastered) Since you can only get the original by odering it from a web service, the remaster is all most people will find in the MEGADETH bin at their favorite record store! Remastered with three bonus tracks! How does this sound different from the original..VERY different! Like a totally different record. For some reason when Dave set out to remaster his back catalogue, the Vocal tracks and the Harmonica tracks were no where to be found for his MD.45 project, left with two choices, have Lee Ving come back and re-sing all the vocal tracks and re-do all the Harmonica tracks.....or, do them himself and replace the Harmonica tracks with guitar! Well, Dave did just that and the result...A great record!! Better than the original...NO, but equally as good! Daves' singing is great, the added guitar tracks round out the sound and make it fatter and heavier! Not to slag Lee Ving (FEAR is a great band, headed up by punks crowned prince!!) But, I find this version in my CD player more, and the tunes seem to be alot catchier!! By the by, it wouldn't surprise me if Lee Spirited the vocal tracks away and has them hidden somewhere!! Luke warm response to this effort probably soured the enthusiasm these guys intially had for this project....basically all the whiners out there who complained..."Dave Doesn't sing, there for it has no relevence!!" rejejcted this effort! So now all the whiners can rejoice, it's remastered with new vocal tracks! The bottom line MD.45 the remaster is definately worth the $12.99 It'll cost ya to purchase it. The bonus tracks are cool too: One demo, one instrumental and a great track called "Chutney", which out of all the bonus tracks on any remaster dave has done, Is my favorite!

so buy either one, they're both good for different reasons! Just pick what side of the train tracks you want to be from!

I've always liked Megadeth, so I was very interested in hearing essentially what a Dave Mustaine project would sound with someone else singing, and it turned out much better than I could have expected! Lee Ving's singing, although very limited, fits the music very well, much better than the remastered version of this CD where Dave rerecorded the vocal tracks. It definately contributes to the laid-back feel to the CD, something a Megadeth album could never claim to be; you can practically hear the cracking of the whip Dave Mustaine uses to keep the guys strictly and rigidly in tempo on Megadeth albums, but he must have left that whip in his other guitar case for these sessions...

This CD is NOT another Megadeth release, but now it is especially important to get as much Dave Mustaine as possible with Megadeth (temporarily) broken up. This is an excellent album (Even though Ving doing the vocals). DeGrasso is an awesome drummer, and the entire album is very polished. Don't listen to the other reviewers who pan the album...it is well worth the full asking price, let alone the amazingly low prices that the used copies allow you to spend. Get this album if you like any great 90s Metal. Buy this CD!!! Everyone should know that Megadeth will be back in 2005, but this is a GREAT FILLER. It is not really a side project, but rather a stepping stone. Jimmy joined Megadeth shortly after (good luck NICK!!). Give it a try!
