4.0 out of 5 stars worth looking for
I've always liked Megadeth, so I was very interested in hearing essentially what a Dave Mustaine project would sound with someone else singing, and it turned out much better than I could have expected! Lee Ving's singing, although very limited, fits the music very well, much better than the remastered version of this CD where Dave rerecorded the vocal tracks. It...

3.0 out of 5 stars MD.45 Remaster VS Original, June 13, 2007
This review is from: Craving (Audio CD)
for those of you who have no idea, MD.45 was a side project that Dave Mustaine did around 1996 with Lee Ving from FEAR!Fed up with where Megadeth was going musically, Dave got angry and deceided to make a punk record. And why not, Megadeth is rich with Punk music influences!! So he recruited Kelly Lemieux on bass, Veteran MEGA skin basher Jimmy DeGrasso on drums, Dave on guitar and Lee Ving on Vocals and Harmonica. Now that you have a little background, let's get to the reviews:

MD.45 (original) 11 songs of pure punk!! Really! Dave's playing is very Steve Jones ala' Sex Pistols, very differnet from Megadeth. Don't buy this if your looking for the Megadeth sound, you'll hate it! Which I do believe was the Intial gripe alot of fans had about this record. "Dave Doesn't sing!!!" No, he created a BAND, he wanted to be part of a group, not have people buy this record simply because HE did it!! Megadeth is pure MUSTAINE, MD.45 was a group effort in the recording studio, all songs were either written by mustaine alone or with Lee Ving. "The day the music died" is a great punk anthem...and"Designer Behavior" is a punk statement about the state of affairs as it were with the medical profession whaking people with massive amounts of pills and expecting them to function. "The Creed" is a MEGA demo, that mustaine and Ving turned into fantastic song about the American Indians...All in All, if you like Punk, If you like Lee Ving, and if you want to be surprised by Dave's guitar playing BUY THIS!!! Otherwise stay the hell away from this record....

MD.45 (remastered) Since you can only get the original by odering it from a web service, the remaster is all most people will find in the MEGADETH bin at their favorite record store! Remastered with three bonus tracks! How does this sound different from the original..VERY different! Like a totally different record. For some reason when Dave set out to remaster his back catalogue, the Vocal tracks and the Harmonica tracks were no where to be found for his MD.45 project, left with two choices, have Lee Ving come back and re-sing all the vocal tracks and re-do all the Harmonica tracks.....or, do them himself and replace the Harmonica tracks with guitar! Well, Dave did just that and the result...A great record!! Better than the original...NO, but equally as good! Daves' singing is great, the added guitar tracks round out the sound and make it fatter and heavier! Not to slag Lee Ving (FEAR is a great band, headed up by punks crowned prince!!) But, I find this version in my CD player more, and the tunes seem to be alot catchier!! By the by, it wouldn't surprise me if Lee Spirited the vocal tracks away and has them hidden somewhere!! Luke warm response to this effort probably soured the enthusiasm these guys intially had for this project....basically all the whiners out there who complained..."Dave Doesn't sing, there for it has no relevence!!" rejejcted this effort! So now all the whiners can rejoice, it's remastered with new vocal tracks! The bottom line MD.45 the remaster is definately worth the $12.99 It'll cost ya to purchase it. The bonus tracks are cool too: One demo, one instrumental and a great track called "Chutney", which out of all the bonus tracks on any remaster dave has done, Is my favorite!

so buy either one, they're both good for different reasons! Just pick what side of the train tracks you want to be from!

It definately contributes to the laid-back feel to the CD, something a Megadeth album could never claim to be; you can practically hear the cracking of the whip Dave Mustaine uses to keep the guys strictly and rigidly in tempo on Megadeth albums, but he must have left that whip in his other guitar case for these sessions...

5.0 out of 5 stars Different....have an open Mind, May 18, 2004

This CD is NOT another Megadeth release, but now it is especially important to get as much Dave Mustaine as possible with Megadeth (temporarily) broken up. This is an excellent album (Even though Ving doing the vocals). DeGrasso is an awesome drummer, and the entire album is very polished. Don't listen to the other reviewers who pan the album...it is well worth the full asking price, let alone the amazingly low prices that the used copies allow you to spend. Get this album if you like any great 90s Metal. Buy this CD!!! Everyone should know that Megadeth will be back in 2005, but this is a GREAT FILLER. It is not really a side project, but rather a stepping stone. Jimmy joined Megadeth shortly after (good luck NICK!!). Give it a try!

Well, I agree with the previous reviewer about the guitar playing and drumming, but I also think that Lee Ving's voice is pretty good and suits the music well. However, it's a very different voice from Dave's. The song "The Day the Music Died" is AWESOME.

5.0 out of 5 stars The original version of the album (and best), August 27, 2011

Craving by MD 45 is an interesting mix of angry punk rock vocals and hard rock music. Lee Ving's gritty vocals go quite well with Dave Mustane's loud guitar rock. I only heard of this album a few years ago and I thought that the combination of Ving and Mustane would sound "interesting" so I located a used copy of Craving. I was very impressed and sadden by the lack of a follow up. I enjoyed the smoky nicotine stained aroma and alcoholic fumes that the music gave off. I enjoyed that hard rockin' sound that accompanied and complimented the misogynistic vocals. Ving's vocals haven't changed since his days fronting Fear but surprisingly Mustane changed his guitar work to more of a hardcore punk sound instead of is usual heavy metal influenced sound.

Why wasn't this album received well when it was released? Who knows, maybe the idea of Lee Ving and Dave Mustane making a rock album scared away fans of both camps. The album was re-released a few years ago but it's a different mix and Ving's vocals were re-recorded by Mustane. I heard both version and the original is the only way to go. It was good while it lasted.

Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT Megadeth but still worth a listen., December 29, 2004
By
This review is from: Craving (Audio CD)
Don't hate Lee Ving! About forty seconds into the first track, Ving holds an off-key note that almost made me take the CD right back out of my car stereo before I really gave it a chance. What a mistake that would have been! I left it in to the end of the album and despite Lee Ving DEFINITELY NOT being Dave Mustaine, I like the album more and more with every additional listen. His voice has kinda grown on me and the music is outstanding. Having listened to a lot of Megadeth, I can tell which lyrics are Ving's work and which are Mustaine's. Megadeth fans will know what I mean and they'll also find quite a few verses that only Dave could pull off without sounding cheesy. Just listen to the track 'Fight Hate' and try not to smirk.

Anyway, this is NOT Megadeth but more like Megadeth meets southern rock. Two hands in the air for track 5's Metal Harmonica! \m/ \m/

It's worth adding to any Mustaine, DeGrasso, or Lemieux fan's collection for the music alone. I am a long time Megadeth/Dave Mustaine fan since way back at the release of KIMB right after Dave and that OTHER band parted ways. *sneer*
Anyway, I heard about the MD.45 project while on the Megadeth Fan Forum and was able to get a factory-sealed copy for just shy of $6.50 with shipping.

Everyone's saying that if your not a megadeth fan u shouldnt buy this album. Well, i'm not a fan and i loved this cd. Actually, right now i cant even name a megadeth song off the top of my head right now. I dont even like any bands that can be compared to the craving except possibly stone sour. I also though the vocals were great, its nice to be able to understand the lyrics.

I was really happy to see this used for like 2 bucks here. I wanted to get some Lee Ving stuff since Fear didn't put out to much material (I like Fear). I found out about this obscure release through wikipedia and am really happy I did! Anyway it's not punk by any means, its heavy metal in a Metallica kind of way; and thats my kind of stuff (and my ladies also, oh man she get's off on this cd!). There is so much stuff out there (including Fear's last release) thats like really expensive to buy on Amazon, thankfully this isn't one of them, if your a Fear fan GET IT! Its KILLER!

Being a fan of Megadeth, it was only natural for me to find out about this side project of Dave Mustaine's. I ordered it and though the vocals are not sung by Mustaine, they are still great nonetheless. For any fan of Megadeth, this is a must have, as it is very similar to their music (post Rust In Peace--less noise, more understandable lyrics). The quality is excellent. 11 tracks, all of which are good. My favorite would have to be "The Day the Music Died". Get this CD!
