3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Mr. Morrison Thomas on February 25, 2012
Format: Audio CD
Honored to be the first to review this fabulous work by Art Farmer and his friends.

Recorded at Van Gelder Studios January 1977
CTI recordings - originally issued on Vinyl in 1977
Reiussed in Japan only on CD by King Records
Several reissues by King up until the mid 90's (mine is the first from 1987 K32Y 6154)

Art Farmer - Trumpet/Flugelhorn
Jeremy Steig - Flute
Steve Gadd - Drums
Will Lee - Electric Bass
George Mraz - Acoustic bass
Eric Gale - Guitar
Dave Grusin - Keyboards

4 songs (35 minutes recording time)

1) Crawl Space
2) Siddartha
3) Chanson
4) Petite Belle

Art Farmer was well into his 40's and a hugely respected jazz musician at the time of this recording. The cream of the cream of (mostly New York based) jazz fusion musicians contributed to this recording; little known these days. The style is laid back jazz fusion played with great taste. All 4 tracks are excellent, difficult to indicate a preferred and/or weak track. It is music for a sunny day, positive sounding, yet smooth and relaxing.

The down side is a general lack of availability on CD or MP3, in Europe or the US, making copies hard to find and pricing prohibitive (even in Japan). Like numerous other great jazz recordings, the major record companies perhaps believe that they will not make enough money on them, so have never released recordings such as Crawl Space on CD (in this case i believe Sony owns the rights). It took Japanese record company King to do this, and they only issued the CD in relatively small quantities for the Japanese market. Therefore, this great music has become a very rare find which is an artistic injustice.

All relevant information about this wonderful piece of Art has been provided below by the first reviewer. All I can add is that of the many Art Farmer CDs I own, from his early days in the 1950s to his later work, this is my favorite, and one of my all-time favorite CDs!!!
