5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun and no batteries! December 7, 2010

Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 3.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This arrived today and I think I was as excited as my 6-year-old daughter. Spin art was one of my favorite activities as a kid and this is a blast.
I took it out of the box and was so happy to find that there were NO batteries needed, you simply push the "plunger" down and control the speed yourself.
It comes with 3 bottles of paint, and 10 round discs. The paint goes A LONG way. We did 10 paintings today and you can barely tell we used the paint. It is also washable, came off the table and hands super easily.
The discs are thick, but we made more out of construction paper using the disc as a template as suggested in the instructions and they worked just as well.
This will be a super fun activity for my daughter to do with her friends and no fighting as one can spin and the other can paint.

My only complaint is that one side of the platform you put the disc on is hard to get the disc tucked under, slightly defective. It really isn't a problem though so I won't bother sending it back.

Nice work Crayola.

3.0 out of 5 stars Manual spin means no batteries - and a sore hand! December 25, 2010

Durability: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
The Crayola Color Twister does what the other paint spinners do but what I didn't realize when I bought it was that it isn't battery operated - it's manual.

I like that because it's environmentally friendly, you never have to replace batteries, and you don't have to worry about the kids leaving it on when they're done playing with it.

There's a big button that you push to set it spinning. It does the job quite nicely, but it was too hard for my 5-year-old grandson to press. So the adults did that job while he placed the paint on the disk.

It should be noted that the button was designed with an imprinted swirl design that will make your palm quite sore after a few presses. In this case fashion interferes with function. :p

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun for kids! December 16, 2010

I got this on Amazon when it was only $4 about 2 weeks ago, and now they don't even sell it anymore, so go find it in your local retailer before paying non-Amazon sellers' ridiculous prices.
So about the toy!
It's so much fun for kids and I even made one and had a good time!
No electricity is required and you don't even need to CONSTANTLY press down on it.
We used it during a blackout and it was fun!
For kids to create something themselves using only drops of paint and their hands enables them to be proud of it, unlike e-Coloring pages, etc. in today's world.
I would definitely recommend this toy for all ages!

1.0 out of 5 stars NO REFILLS - Edited review January 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
Durability: 3.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
1 STAR EDIT: CRAYOLA SENT ME AN EMAIL THAT THEY DO NOT OFFER PRODUCT REFILLS. THAT IS BAD. THIS ONLY COMES WITH 10 DISKS. YOU CAN USE THOSE IN ABOUT AN HOUR. SO WHEN YOU ARE DECIDING TO BUY THIS PRODUCT, THINK ABOUT THE PRICE FOR ABOUT AN HOUR OF FUN. HOPE THAT HELPS...

MY ORIGINAL 4 STAR REVIEW:

Let me start by saying that we bought this item on sale. Paying Amazon's full price would probably make me rate this differently.

The good:

-No batteries - It has a hand pump on the side. I just pushed it while we spun. My 6 year old could do it fine. This really is more fun with two people.

-We liked the color mixing properties, and how it showed up when you stopped spinning. It made it really interesting for our Kindergarten science project on Chromotography.

-The toy really does what it says it will...the art looks like it does on the box, and kids can really use it. I am tired of toys that kids can't even use. So frustrating.

The not so good:

-Classic Crayola - make something fun, get the kids hooked, and nowhere to find refills on the paper. We have had this problem with a handful of crayola markers. THERE ARE ONLY 10 INSERTS. Short lived toy at only 10 inserts. Again, if I had paid full price I would be mad.

-Advertised price is high. At the sale price I feel like I got my monies worth. Cheaper would have been nicer, but I don't feel ripped off either.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can't buy refills June 11, 2013
Durability: 3.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 3.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
My 4 year old son really enjoyed this product at first, though my husband and I had to handle the actually spinning part since that takes some effort and is difficult to sustain, but the real issue is that Crayola does not sell the paper discs separately, so once you use up the original 10, you're out of luck. This a ridiculous oversight on Crayola's part, and makes the item fairly useless very quickly.

This toy produces lot of fun for kids interested in arts, water color and painting. My daughter used it a lot for 6 months before she decided to move on. Produces lot of "artistic" color paintings. Enjoyable toy.

This is soooo much fun. Just make sure that when you insert the paper tabs (to keep the paper in place) that you keep the tabs facing up or else they drag along the side making it hard to spin.
