5.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I didn't get these sooner!
I bought these on a whim for my 2-1/2 yr old son. We've tried the oversize crayons, the bathtub crayons, washable markers etc before and he's either broken them (really quickly) or they've been too messy. These crayons are perfect for him. They don't break if he presses to hard (or only a little bit breaks off) and they aren't messy like markers. I definitely recommend...

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice idea but they still break when dropped
the twistable crayons are a nice idea. Bought them for my daughter, 28 months old. They break easily when they roll off the table They should have a stop molded into them to prevent them from rolling. Large pieces will come out of the plastic tube and can not be put back. so you must twist out more crayon. So they did not solve the problem of crayons breaking. I now...

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a crayon-breaking kid!, August 27, 2008

These are great! The mini-twistables are about the same size as a regular crayon and fit well in little hands. They stop my daughter from making a game of breaking crayons while letting her use the narrower crayons she prefers. Being able to write with just one end reduces errant stripes on my table.

I only wish there was a washable option! These are our main crayons for my 18-month old. The washable crayons seem to be softer than regular crayons, and it seems like the plastic housing would give them extra protection.

Why didn't someone think of this sooner? They stand up to 3 year olds, which is saying a lot. They are very easy to hold, and they don't break when you use them or push too hard. My son loves these crayons. Regular crayons in my house last about an hour or so, and these have been working great for over a month. No more wasted crayons! Finally!!

We got these for our 2 1/2 year old and they work great. They are more durable than regular crayons. He would press down on the crayons and they would break in his hand or when they fell on the floor they would break. So far I've only had one of them break in a two week time frame and before he would break about 5 crayons a day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful as base color!, September 5, 2011

I bought these because of the appeal of not having to sharpen them yet was sorely disappointed with the lack of pigment, blending, and darkening possible with these crayons. Their texture is considerably different than the traditional, paper-wrapped crayons by Crayola and they lay differently on the paper, with a lighter but smoother texture. After noticing how smooth they were and how much less white gaps were visible compared to the regular Crayola crayons, I experimented laying them down as a base and then applying one of the regular Crayola crayons over them. All I can say is OMG! The annoying white marks virtually disappeared and I was able to achieve a smooth, rich color on coloring book paper that is completely unachievable while using either the Twistables or the regular Crayola crayons by themselves.

The combination of Twistables and regular Crayola crayons on regular white paper is absolutely lovely, and though I've never used pastels, I imagine that the texture achieved through the use of these crayons is close to that achieved through pastels. A word of advice, apply the Twistables as evenly as possible as a base or you'll end up with darker, blotchy regions after you apply the regular Crayola crayons over them.

Before I even heard of these I had to get my child those pesky little annoying crayons. Then I heard of it and I considered the fact that you dont have to shred the top off to get more of the crayon part. When I got it I knew it was worth the money. Great for school supplies and office supplies too.

We got these crayons for my son when he was about a year old. He's now 21 months and these are the best crayons imaginable. Unlike the standard Crayola crayons, there's no paper that can peel off, when they're dropped they don't break, and there's such a small piece of crayon that's exposed that my son couldn't make a meal out of them when he was chewing on everything. The colour is great in cheap colouring books too. I highly recommend these!

I would never buy these again or recommend them because if you drop them (or they roll off the table) on wood or tile floors, they break. Then, you have to twist until the rest of the crayon that is still attached comes out. What a waste! The piece that falls out of the plastic tube is too thin to use alone. Waste of plastic, too. I guess I only recommend them to people who have carpeted floors or some way of defying gravity while using these crayons.

I really like the concept of the Mini Twistables. I used a similar product many years ago, but they had a crayon like material inside of them as opposed to the lead like material in Twistables.

Twistables are basically fat mechanical pencils. They are neat and easy to use - just twist up more lead as needed - and they color nicely. However, the colors are not bright like those of a crayon and even though the colors have the same names as their crayon counter parts, by comparison they are washed out and in some cases grey looking. Since the lead is hard as opposed to waxy, like crayons, you have to press down quite hard to coax a decent color from them. On the up side, the hardness makes them last longer and they are not prone to breaking unless you twist the lead up too far.

The actual size of a Twistable mechanical pencil is 4 1/2 inches (longer than a standard crayon). It holds a thick piece of lead/crayon that is about the same length as a standard crayon and three quarters of the thickness. Just keep in mind that because they can't be sharpened, you will always be working with a thick blunt tip. Depending on your needs, this may work well for you.

In my opinion, if they could make Twistables with the crayon material rather than the lead, they would be perfect.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The back of the box states, in tiny type, that they are NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN UNDER 36 MONTHS due to small parts which may cause a choking hazard if swallowed. This should be on the front of the box and in a decent size type.
