The design seems to be based on a valve or hinge of some kind, inside the marker. When you twist it "up," the valve opens and lets the drawing tip emerge. When you twist it "down," the tip goes back into the marker body and the valve closes to keep it from drying out. So, it's easy to see that if you don't take care to twist it all the way, the marker tip is left unprotected and will dry out. I can't speak to how durable the valves are, as we have only been using these markers a week or two so far.
I bought two packages of these; in one package, one marker was completely dried out when we opened the package, and another was partially dried out. In the other package, all were fine.
Note also that these markers are NOT washable like many of the other Crayola markers!!! Of course they will wash off eventually, but they don't come off easily with a little bit of soap and water, like the ones with the "Washable" designation do.

These markers were dry as soon as I opened them. That sucked, because we needed them for a project and I didn't have the time or money to buy more Crayola markers. Read morePublished on February 14, 2011 by S. Gee
